Position Overview

As the In-House Counsel, you will be integral in delivering legal expertise and support to our organization. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure adherence to all applicable laws and regulations that govern mortgage lending and servicing operations. You will also collaborate closely with the Senior Director of Legal and Compliance to manage legal risks, draft and review contracts, and provide strategic legal advice to executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Offer legal counsel and support on a variety of transactional, corporate, employment, and compliance issues to facilitate the organization's objectives.
  • Work in partnership with internal departments such as originations, servicing, capital markets, and risk management to communicate compliance standards and contractual obligations across business functions. Address legal and compliance challenges, mitigate risks, and implement necessary corrective measures.
  • Draft and review contracts, agreements, and other legal documents pertinent to corporate transactions (e.g., NDAs, vendor agreements) and mortgage lending and servicing operations.
  • Perform legal research and analysis to remain informed about laws and regulations impacting the mortgage sector.
  • Engage with external compliance consultants, legal advisors, and regulatory bodies as necessary to oversee litigation and regulatory examinations and inquiries.
  • Act as the primary liaison for regulatory audits, examinations, and inquiries related to compliance, and prepare and submit regulatory reports and filings as mandated by federal and state regulatory agencies.
  • Assist in the formulation, maintenance, and execution of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards governing mortgage lending and servicing. Revise compliance policies as required.
  • Conduct regular compliance audits and assessments to evaluate the institution's adherence to regulatory standards and internal policies, and investigate compliance issues, complaints, or violations promptly and effectively.
  • Provide training and guidance to staff on legal and compliance topics, including fair lending practices, anti-money laundering regulations, and other financial services laws.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in a state bar.
  • A minimum of 3 years of legal practice experience, with relevant legal expertise. Experience in mortgage lending, real estate finance, or in-house legal roles is advantageous.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capability to work autonomously, prioritize responsibilities, and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams while balancing legal considerations with business goals.
  • High ethical standards and a commitment to confidentiality and integrity.
