The Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures is actively seeking candidates for Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector roles at levels I, II, or III. Agriculture Division Overview

The primary mission of the County Agricultural Commissioner's office is to "Promote and Protect" agriculture while safeguarding public health, safety, and welfare. Agriculture plays a vital role in the economy of Sonoma County, and the department promotes and protects this sector through educational outreach and regulatory enforcement. The Agriculture Division is responsible for field inspections and regulatory activities across various programs, including pesticide enforcement, pest prevention, nursery regulation, egg quality, farmers markets, hazardous materials storage, and cannabis oversight.

Weights & Measures Division Overview

The Weights & Measures Division is dedicated to ensuring the economic integrity of the community by maintaining trust in the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices utilized by consumers and businesses. Through inspections, educational initiatives, and outreach, consumers are provided with reliable means for value comparison, while businesses are assured fair competition within the marketplace.

Position Details

The Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector I role serves as an entry-level position where you will learn to conduct field inspections and provide educational outreach to businesses, employees, and the public regarding the programs we oversee.

As an ideal candidate, you may possess several of the following qualifications:
  • Fundamental knowledge of biology, plant science, and entomology

The Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures is currently recruiting to fill multiple Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector positions at levels I, II, or III. Education and Experience: Any combination of education and work experience that would provide the necessary knowledge and abilities. Typically, this includes graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution in one of the following disciplines: Agricultural, Biological, Chemical, or Physical Science; Commerce; Engineering; Law Enforcement; Marketing; Mathematics; Physics; or Statistics, or other degrees approved by the California Secretary of Food and Agriculture.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution with at least 30 semester units (or equivalent) in one or any combination from the aforementioned disciplines.

License: A valid driver's license at the appropriate level, including special endorsements, may be required depending on the assignment.

If assigned to weights and measures inspection, a valid Class B California driver's license and Tank Vehicle Endorsement must be obtained within one year of appointment to this role.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: advanced mathematics; principles of botany, entomology, plant pathology, physical science, chemistry, and related laboratory techniques; Federal, State, and local regulations, laws, and procedures relevant to agricultural, weights and measures, and hazardous material inspection and enforcement; the agricultural sector in Sonoma County; sanitation principles for food product handling and testing; data processing systems; safety protocols for handling chemicals and responding to hazardous materials incidents; techniques for case management, record keeping, and report writing; and investigative techniques and enforcement procedures.

Ability to: perform complex mathematical calculations; interpret and enforce laws, codes, and regulations; analyze technical materials and lab results; collect and organize field data, write clear reports, and maintain accurate records; create detailed maps of field locations; learn to conduct a variety of agricultural, hazardous material, fire safety, or weights and measures inspections; gather information through interviews and investigations; operate and maintain department equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships; manage interactions with uncooperative individuals; follow oral and written instructions; assess situations accurately and recommend appropriate actions; communicate effectively with the public, colleagues, and industry representatives; safely handle hazardous materials; maintain situational awareness in dynamic environments; utilize office technology and software for regulatory programs; and lift and transport 50-pound objects over short distances; and operate a pickup truck with a trailer.
