Job Overview:

Under the guidance of the Epidemiology and Analysis Group Manager within the Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch (CESB), this role provides essential support to the Research Specialist Team.

The position focuses on enhancing data integrity and preparing datasets from the Texas Cancer Registry for national cancer surveillance through data linkage and deduplication processes.

Adheres to the technical guidelines established by recognized authorities in cancer data management, including:

- North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR)
- National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR).

Generates cancer incidence and mortality datasets for utilization by the CESB and various stakeholders. Engages in writing and executing computer programs using SQL and SAS related to cancer incidence, mortality, and demographic data in Texas. Operates under supervision while exercising moderate independence and initiative.


Key Responsibilities:

Maintains regular attendance in accordance with agency policies and performs additional duties as required.


(45%) Conducts tasks involving cancer data for both internal purposes and external submissions to NAACCR, SEER, and NPCR. Responsibilities may include preparing incidence and mortality datasets following technical specifications from external standard-setters. Additionally, the role involves generating reports from SQL and SAS for routine and ad-hoc requests. The Research Specialist will utilize cancer-specific software (e.g., SEER*DMS, SEER*Prep, SEER*Edits) to verify data integrity and identify anomalies within datasets that require further examination. Provides consultation on research design, planning, and reporting.

(25%) Executes deduplication tasks to ensure the accuracy of cancer incidence data counts and the suitability of data files for research purposes. Employs established methodologies and software to deduplicate records using patient-level and tumor-level fields. Proposes enhancements to deduplication processes as necessary and collaborates with internal teams, such as the Quality Assurance Group, to address evolving needs.

(25%) Links cancer datasets with additional data sources (such as death certificates or state department records) to enhance data quality or facilitate research initiatives. The Research Specialist may perform probabilistic data linkage using specialized software like Match*Pro. Contributes to and adheres to team documentation of technical procedures.

(5%) Undertakes other assigned duties, which may include participating in agency obligations for disaster response and recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such responsibilities may necessitate adjustments to work schedules or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
