Job Summary: The Curatorial Assistant for Latin American Art provides support to the Associate Curator of Latin American Art to carry out projects related to the Museum's permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. The Curatorial Assistant will assist with preparation for acquisitions and installations, record-keeping related to the permanent collection and exhibitions, permanent collection research, and exhibition planning and preparation. They will occasionally coordinate internal and external meetings. Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Reporting to the Associate Curator of Latin American Art, and in collaboration with the Curatorial & Exhibitions Coordinator, assist the Curator with a range of research and administrative tasks.
  • Organize and maintain general departmental files.
  • Assist with preparation and research for exhibitions and permanent collection rotations, researching works of art, coordinating loan requests and preparation of didactics and graphics.
  • Assist with incoming loans and proposed acquisitions, conducting research and preparing proposals for presentation.
  • Collaborate with the Curatorial & Exhibitions Coordinator and other Curatorial Assistants with preparation for Collections & Exhibitions Committee meetings.
  • Assist with permanent collection digitization, updating and maintaining collection records in TMS, participating in digitization project meetings, and coordinating requests for photography.
  • Assist with the production of museum publications (catalogues, brochures and other material); including coordinating with editors, designers and printers, gathering images, bibliographies, credit lines and author contributions, and reviewing manuscripts, and maintaining project schedules.
  • Obtain permissions and copyright clearance for images and maintain accurate credit lines and checklists; provide caption and image information for exhibitions and publications.
  • Coordinate study visits and collection access for scholars.
  • Respond to inquiries from scholars, collectors, dealers, and the general public.
  • Perform administrative tasks including processing expenses and requests for payment; coordinating mailings; making travel arrangements as requested.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail, with strong administrative and research skills; able to maintain and update detailed collection records (physical and digital files).
  • Able to collaborate with colleagues and work concurrently on multiple projects with limited supervision. Ability to meet demanding deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe software (Acrobat, Photoshop). Previous experience with Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Zoom, and The Museum System (TMS) preferred.
  • The position is Full-Time, requiring regular business office hours Monday-Friday; evenings and weekend hours may be required for museum events and programs.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 1-2 years of work experience; prior experience in a museum or other arts organization is preferred.
  • Professional fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
