We are seeking a highly skilled Plumber Specialist to join our team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. As a key member of our Facilities Maintenance department, you will be responsible for performing complex plumbing and pipe-fitting work, including inspections, maintenance, repair, and installation of underground piping systems, low and medium pressure steam lines, and associated valve/control devices.
Key Responsibilities- Perform specialty and/or complex plumbing and pipe-fitting work at the journey level, including inspections, maintenance, repair, and installation of underground piping systems, low and medium pressure steam lines, and associated valve/control devices.
- Repair and maintain low and medium pressure steam lines, traps, heat exchangers, pressure reducing devices, control devices, and equipment.
- Install, inspect, and test back-flow preventers, ensuring that there are no cross connections between water and sewer lines.
- Repair, replace, and test fire hydrants.
- Install, repair water coolers and drinking fountains, including refrigerant systems.
- Repair condensate return systems.
- Maintain and repair instantaneous steam-fired hot water generators.
- Maintain and repair building boilers.
- Operate specialized video camera equipment to inspect sewer and storm lines.
- Specify, install, test, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair domestic and laboratory piping, including glass, stainless steel, and sani-tech systems.
- Specify, install, test, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair specialized laboratory equipment, including distilled water equipment, autoclaves, sterilizers, cage/equipment, washers, dechlorinators, softners, UV light systems, humidifiers/dehumidifier.
- Perform maintenance on electrical/electronic gauges, controls, solenoids.
- Troubleshoot and maintain dental oral evacuation system/saliva holding tanks, associated biohazard-type equipment, and domestic water filtration and backwash equipment.
- Perform underground pipe repair work in ditches and manholes up to 20 feet deep, requiring trenching and shoring in accordance with OSHA/MOSH regulations.
- Locate underground piping for contractors, diagnose water flow problems, determine connection requirements, and update facility/infrastructure drawings.
- Perform and record maintenance of emergency eyewash, fire pumps, shower, and sprinkler systems.
- Determine maintenance requirements, schedules, and perform testing of fire suppression sprinkler systems.
- Overhaul pumps, including circulators, sumps, boosters, air, vacuum, and gas.
- Lay out and assemble pipe systems and supports.
- Inspect work site to determine presence of obstruction, plan installation and repairs to avoid obstructions, and cut, bend, weld, solder, braze, groove, and thread pipes.
- Oversee and perform repair and replacement of toilets, sinks, drain lines, and faucets.
- Clean obstruction from waste and sewage lines.
- Prepare estimates of time, labor, and materials, and prepare reports reflecting daily operations and project status.
- Use computer-based estimating, scheduling, and costing programs.
- Develop and use automated equipment preventive maintenance programs.
- Operate and maintain tools and equipment of the plumbing and steamfitting trades.
- Clean work area upon completion of project.
- Provide guidance and training in plumbing work to other maintenance personnel.
- Have lead responsibility on projects, may review work of lower-level mechanics.
- Maintain understanding of current trends, codes, safety, practices, and technologies related to the trade and associated trades.
- Read, interpret, and perform work from complex blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
- High School Diploma/GED
- Six years progressively responsible experience in the plumbing and pipe-fitting trade, experience with maintenance of hot water systems/components
- Maryland State certification as a licensed plumber required; Master plumbing license required
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job.
Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license is required.
Candidates selected for employment may be required to be trained to work with asbestos and must be available for emergencies on an as needed basis.
Employees assigned to work with CFC refrigerants must maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law.
Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates/are/eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
