Key Responsibilities
The primary objective of this role is to guarantee that the fleet vehicles and equipment are serviced and repaired in a secure, dependable, cost-effective, and operationally sound manner.
This position is integral to Nicor Gas, concentrating on all preventive measures and specific advanced corrective maintenance tasks related to the company’s fleet vehicles and equipment.
Technical Proficiency:
- Conducts all preventive maintenance activities for fleet vehicles and equipment in line with established fleet protocols.
- Executes diagnostics and repairs on electrical systems for all fleet vehicles and equipment; addresses drivability issues for gasoline-powered vehicles.
- Performs diagnostics, repairs, and component replacements for brake systems on all fleet vehicles and equipment, adhering to manufacturer guidelines.
- Facilitates the transportation of fleet vehicles and equipment between service locations and operational areas; undertakes fueling tasks in compliance with defined fleet protocols, safety regulations, and legal standards.
- Assists with fleet helper back-up and other assigned responsibilities.
Operational Insight:
- Recognizes and communicates with supervisors and qualified fleet personnel regarding preventive and corrective maintenance concerns that exceed their expertise to ensure safe and timely resolution.
- Effectively organizes and manages daily work tasks; accurately documents time, materials, and service charges in accordance with company policies and fleet work practices.
- Identifies and reports unsafe conditions or practices to ensure adherence to company policies and to minimize the risk of injuries or safety incidents.
Collaboration:
- Interacts with fleet, business unit, and departmental personnel in a professional manner, ensuring transparency in fleet maintenance and transportation activities.
- Coordinates with third-party service providers, training, and safety teams to enhance overall fleet maintenance and training effectiveness.
- Works alongside fleet, departmental, and safety personnel to maintain a secure work environment.
Performance Delivery:
- Completes responsibilities promptly and accurately to ensure the availability, performance, and reliability of fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Identifies and initiates improvements in fleet processes, services, and materials aimed at enhancing departmental efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Provides timely updates and information regarding pending fleet vehicle and maintenance activities to facilitate effective resource scheduling.
Qualifications:
Essential:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Commercial Driver's License Class A (with air brake endorsement).
- Clean driving record.
- Department of Transportation medical certification.
- Must provide personal tools necessary for daily tasks and acquire the complete Fleet Services Mechanic tool list as per the bargaining agreement within one year of certification.
- Pass the company’s in-house Fleet Services Mechanic Certification examination.
- A.S.E. certifications (minimum of four, with at least three from Engine Repair, Brakes, Electrical Systems, Engine Performance, or Suspension/Steering).
- Availability for 2nd shift work (approximately 3:30 PM - Monday through Thursday; Friday 1:30 PM - 10:00 PM).
- Must meet job performance requirements by the 120-day performance review.
Preferred:
- Completion of automotive technology courses.
Experience:
Essential:
- 2-3 years of experience in automotive maintenance, including preventive and corrective measures, brake systems, electrical systems, and tire mounting; or equivalent academic experience.
Preferred:
- Experience in utility, municipal, or commercial fleet maintenance environments.
Skills & Knowledge:
Essential:
- Proficient reading, writing, and computer skills sufficient for entering work orders, time, materials, and other required records into company-supported systems.
- Ability to quickly understand training on expected communication methods with customers, including email, voicemail, face-to-face interactions, and preventive maintenance lists.
- Ability to obtain and maintain company-required driving, safety, and compliance training/certifications in a timely manner.
- Ability to comprehend and fulfill company-defined hands-on training requirements for all preventive maintenance procedures and new equipment types for fleet vehicles and equipment.
Preferred:
- Knowledge of natural gas vehicles and associated support systems.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
- This position operates in a garage and/or field setting.
- Flexibility in working shifts is required.
