Job Title: Tribal Historic Preservation Officer
Salary: $38.42 per hour
Employment Type: Full Time, Exempt
Location: Siletz, Oregon
Role Summary:The Tribal Historic Preservation Officer is responsible for safeguarding the cultural heritage of the Tribe, focusing on compliance with various federal and state regulations. This role entails conducting thorough assessments and ensuring the preservation of historical sites, artifacts, and remains.
Key Responsibilities:- Evaluate and address correspondence related to site disturbances and development proposals.
- Collaborate with governmental agencies and internal teams to assess permits and environmental studies.
- Conduct surveys and monitor areas of cultural significance.
- Establish a network of trained Tribal members to enhance monitoring efforts.
- Oversee the maintenance and documentation of cemetery records and new interments.
Education: A graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, Native American studies, or a related field is required. Candidates must meet the professional qualifications set by the state of Oregon.
Experience: A minimum of four years of experience in NAGPRA and cultural resource legislation is essential.
Knowledge and Skills:Proficiency in federal laws concerning cultural site protection, including the National Historic Preservation Act and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. A deep understanding of indigenous culture and a commitment to its preservation are crucial.
Abilities:
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively.
- Conduct surveys and excavations with precision.
- Review and analyze permit applications.
- Communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
- Represent Tribal interests in various forums.
Experience with ESRI products, archaeological reviews, and a solid understanding of tribal sovereignty are highly valued.
