Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) Academy is a distinguished program under the Art of Problem Solving umbrella, recognized globally for its excellence in K–12 advanced education. Our mission is to identify, inspire, and cultivate the next generation of exceptional problem solvers. Since our inception in 2003, we have empowered countless top-tier students through various educational platforms, including online schooling, in-person academies, and comprehensive learning resources.

The AoPS Academy is currently seeking part-time Elementary Learning Specialists. We are in search of dedicated professionals with robust backgrounds in mathematics, writing, and humanities to deliver our dynamic Math and Language Arts curriculum to small groups of gifted elementary students.

Language Arts sessions invite students to explore diverse problem-solving scenarios within various literary contexts, such as enchanting fantasy realms, ancient myths, American history, and intriguing mysteries. For further details about our offerings, please refer to our Course Catalog.

Current Opportunities:

  • Substitutes with flexible availability capable of teaching multiple advanced elementary levels in both mathematics and language arts.
  • Candidates interested in both substitute teaching this academic year and securing a consistent weekly class assignment.

Key Responsibilities:

In this role, you will utilize company-developed materials to prepare for and instruct advanced courses focused on problem-solving and critical thinking. As an AoPS Academy Elementary Learning Specialist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing for weekly lessons designed by our curriculum development team.
  • Engaging students actively with the course content during each session.
  • Effectively managing a classroom of up to 16 students.
  • Regularly assessing student performance and providing constructive feedback on writing assignments to enhance their skills.
  • Meeting with students and families as necessary before or after class.
  • Occasionally substituting for other classes.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field, Education, or a humanities discipline, or equivalent experience, particularly in mathematics and/or language arts.
  • Experience in teaching or tutoring students is essential, with a preference for classroom experience at the K-5 level. A formal teaching credential is not mandatory.
  • Strong content knowledge in mathematics, reading, writing, and grammar, with the ability to guide students through advanced concepts requiring critical thinking.
  • Ability to provide clear, thoughtful, and comprehensive feedback on students' writing assignments.
  • Expertise in motivating and challenging advanced learners.

Work Environment and Schedule:

This is an in-person position at our Academy location, and candidates must be able to commute accordingly. The role requires a minimum commitment of approximately 3 hours per week for each assigned class, with each course meeting once weekly for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Note that AoPS Academy operates as an afterschool program, with classes scheduled during evenings and weekends, so candidates must be available to teach during after-school hours and/or on weekends.

Compensation and Benefits:

The instructor rate at our Academy location is $36 per hour, encompassing flexible work hours, early arrival time before class, actual class duration, and post-class time. Benefits include:
