Job Summary:

The Charge Nurse is a key member of our healthcare team, responsible for providing leadership and guidance to nursing staff while ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide nursing care to a diverse patient population, conducting assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, and maintaining accurate medical records.
  • Assist in coaching and mentoring department staff in areas of clinical and professional practice, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Role model compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team, assuming leadership responsibilities and contributing to high-level decision-making at the bedside, unit, service line, and institution-wide.
  • Lead unit and shared governance activities, assessing unit needs and identifying opportunities for improvement, serving as a clinical resource for staff, and coordinating education and training initiatives.
  • Foster staff engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, and supporting organizational goals.
  • Anticipate the needs of staff members and proactively offer assistance, promoting a culture of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Role model interprofessional communication, active listening, and teaching, and assist with staff stress management as needed.
  • Improve departmental scores for turnover/retention on unit-based scorecards, promoting a culture of retention and employee satisfaction.
  • Model fair and consistent leadership skills, promoting effective team dynamics and teambuilding strategies through problem-solving, coaching, and developing staff.
  • Coach staff to use efficient and effective communication to establish and maintain a team environment, and to include the patient and family as a part of the team regarding their plan of care.
  • Function as a mentor and resource to unit staff, providing oversight for students, new employees, and preceptorships.
  • Identify levels of organizational conflict and apply tools to effectively resolve concerns, complaints, or conflict with patients, families, physicians, and other interprofessional healthcare team members.
  • Lead the patient and family-centered care standards, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document, and audit plans of care to ensure alignment with these standards.
  • Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff on the improvement of patient care through leader rounding, promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Drive department service standards and activities to improve department scores for patient satisfaction on unit-based scorecards, through role modeling and fostering accountability.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Twenty-four months of clinical nursing experience with demonstration of progressive leadership skills.
  • Registered Nurse - Temporary State Licensure within 60 days.
  • Other credentials and certifications as defined by unit/service line.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional healthcare team, and patients and their families.
  • Contributes to policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of Nursing Unit's Dashboard and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.
  • Demonstrates expertise in operating the electronic medical record.
