At Houston Methodist the Sr Staff RegisteredNurse (RN) position is responsible for functioning as an advancedclinician at the Proficient level according to Benners model ofclinical practice. The Sr Staff RN position provides professionaldirect patient nursing care to a diverse patient population whichmay include patients with varied and complex needs and isconsidered an expert in a specialty. Besides conducting nursingassessments assisting with exams and treatment and maintenance ofmedical records this position assists in coaching and mentoringdepartment staff in areas of clinical and professional practice.Role modeling compassionate communication with physicians and theinterprofessional health care team the Sr Staff RN position assumesleadership responsibilities with high level contributions in thedepartment and across the institution. Responsibilities for thisposition may include but are not limited to leading departmentclinical activities assessing department needs related to practiceand improvement opportunities serving as a clinical resource fordepartment staff and coordinating department education inpartnership with management.

PEOPLEESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
  • Identifies staffdevelopment opportunities for professional growth of colleaguesprovides coaching to meet identified goals. Acts as a model andcoaches staff in effective verbal nonverbal and writtencommunication which includes active listening and teaching.Provides oversight for new employeepreceptorships.
  • Collaboratesto foster healthy relationships in the work environment such asmitigation of conflict. Advocates for a balanced workload promotespositive behaviors and peertopeeraccountability.
  • Improvesnurse satisfaction by serving as a role model and mentorfacilitating teamwork with RNs nonlicensed and interprofessionalstaff. Drives improvement of department scores for employeeengagement i.e. peertopeeraccountability.

SERVICEESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Rolemodels the patient and familycentered care standards as outlined inthe Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.Mentors others regarding specialty populations. Audits plan ofcare. Practices in a manner that is congruent with culturaldiversity and inclusionprinciples.
  • Developsupdates and communicates plan of care includingdischarge/disposition in partnership with the patient family andinterprofessional health care team using the nursing process.Prioritizes care based on the patients needs abilities andpreferences. Advocates on patient/familys behalf to identify andresolve clinical and ethical concerns. Develops appropriateresources and supports department practices andguidelines.
  • Develops andimplements effective patient teaching strategies based on learningneeds; uses appropriate resources incorporating planning for careafter discharge/disposition. Consistently evaluates the patientscomprehension and adapts teaching methodsaccordingly.
  • Drivesdepartment activities to improve department score for patientsatisfaction through peertopeer accountability to servicestandards.

QUALITY/SAFETYESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Modelsthe standards of care related to the nursing process as outlined inthe Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.Provides care as the staff nurse leader to complex patients andleads the interprofessional health care team in implementing planof care. Anticipates/prevents and recognize/resolves early declinesin patient condition and emergent situations. Manages assignment ofcomplex patients and other department demands. Identifies areas ofpractice improvements with researchbased evidence to achievequality measures and patient safety outcomes supported by accuratedocumentation and patientteaching.
  • Models thestandards related to regulatory requirements and professionalpractice as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional NursingPractice document. Role models highly developed assessment clinicaldocumentation leadership and analytical skills; integrates andcontributes to professional practice standards policies proceduresprotocols and leads improvements in patient safetyrelated processesat department or service line level. Contributes to development ofservice line and clinical standards andguidelines.
  • Partners oninitiatives to improve quality and safety scores through peertopeeraccountability reporting near misses and identifying solutions bycollaborating with the interprofessional team. Role modelssituational awareness using teachable moments to improvesafety.

FINANCE ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
  • Models independenttime management effectively and prioritization of daily tasksminimizing incidental overtime. Actively participates in thestewardship and efficient utilization of resources and needsincluding capital and operational budgetneeds.
  • Implementsdepartment strategies to achieve financial target and mentorsothers to do the same through timely documentation of careoptimizing efficiency minimizing incidental overtime and otherareas according to departmentspecifications.

GROWTH/INNOVATIONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Identifiesopportunities for practice changes and performance improvement.Investigates and incorporates evidencebased practices which arepresented to department and leadership. Supports change initiativesand adapts to unexpectedchanges.
  • Champions newcare pathways or service line implementations to improve care tothe community. Identifies trends for improvement opportunities orpractice changes and supports initiatives. Researches the changeand presents options to appropriate clinicalleadership.
  • Expandsindividual nursing knowledge and coaches staff to grow in knowledgeabilities skills and attitudes. Ensures own career discussionsoccur with appropriate management. Serves as the clinical resource.Develops and disseminates as appropriate informational/educationalresources and programs designed to improve quality and professionalpractice. Completes and updates My Development plan on an ongoingbasis.

  • Bachelorsdegree or higher from an accredited school of nursing OR Associatesdegree from an accredited school of nursing with an additional twoyears of nursing experience (in addition to the minimum experiencerequirements listedbelow)

WORKEXPERIENCE
  • Three years ofnursing experience
  • Oneyear in specialty preferred
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSREQUIRED
  • RN Registered NurseTexas State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure within 60 daysOR
  • RNTemp Registered NurseTemporary State Licensure within 60 daysAND
  • BLS Basic Life Support(AHA) AND
  • Other credentialsand certifications as defined by department/service line
