Opportunity Overview:

We are in search of a talented and forward-thinking Process Specialist to enhance our operations. The successful candidate will focus on optimizing processes and validating products for extrusions produced using Atomic13's groundbreaking commercial-sized shear extrusion press. This position demands a comprehensive understanding of aluminum processing and metallurgy, extrusion techniques, and a varied background in product and material testing. A strong passion for aluminum extrusion and process validation is essential. Experience in a manufacturing environment that produces components or finished assemblies for the architectural sector is highly advantageous.

While direct experience in process engineering within the aluminum extrusion or bulk metal forming industries is preferred, it is not a strict requirement.

The Process Specialist will play a crucial role in driving our company's growth and advancing our mission to establish circularity in the aluminum products sector while significantly lowering embodied carbon.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute experimental trials on both conventional and shear extrusion presses.
  • Oversee heat treatment, anodizing, and powder coating processes for trial extrusions.
  • Conduct mechanical testing, microstructural analysis, adhesion testing, and corrosion testing on finished products.
  • Lead process optimization initiatives for Atomic13's inaugural shear extrusion press line.
  • Collaborate with AAMA standards, AA standards, and building & construction clients to develop a validation strategy for our products.
  • Direct the product validation process for extrusions produced on the first shear extrusion press line.
  • Engage with external vendors for necessary testing services.
  • Work alongside simulation and die design teams to analyze simulation results, guiding process design and product development decisions.
  • Partner with design, engineering, and production teams to incorporate simulation insights into actionable solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Materials Engineering Department to assess the impact of alloy chemistry and billet microstructure on product quality.
  • Assist in the design and establishment of a testing laboratory at Atomic13's production facility.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports and presentations to share findings with stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in process engineering, ideally within the aluminum extrusion sector.
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical testing, metallography, microstructural characterization, and corrosion testing methodologies in a research and development context.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in qualifying external anodizing and powder coating service providers.
  • Solid understanding of aluminum extrusion processes, materials science, and the mechanical properties of metals.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment and communicate complex technical concepts effectively.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a dedication to delivering high-quality results.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in manufacturing components or finished assemblies for the architectural sector.
  • Familiarity with AAMA and AA standards.
  • Expertise in alloy development methodologies, both simulation-based and experimental, for wrought aluminum alloys.
  • Hands-on experience in the metal extrusion or metal forging industries.
