Scientific Programmer/Analyst

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced scientific programmer/analyst to join our team at Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA). As a key member of our Algorithms, Modeling and Assessments (AMA) division, you will be responsible for studying the effects of electromagnetic (EM) threats from nuclear or other sources.

Your primary focus will be on understanding and simulating EM environments, estimating the impact of EM fields and ionizing radiation on electronic systems, and researching hardening methods to protect sensitive equipment. You will work independently, driven by a passion for research and development, and apply scientific methods to solve challenging technical problems.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and troubleshooting C++ and C# code for our flagship EM prediction software tool running in Windows or Linux.
  • Scripting in MATLAB or similar to prototype new algorithms or models.
  • Improving existing EM propagation models.
  • Writing assessments and presenting program work to government customers.

Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be U.S. citizens eligible for a Department of Defense Secret, or higher, level security clearance.

Required qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related science with 8-10 years of related experience, or a Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related science with 6-8 years of related experience.
  • Programming expertise in C# or C++, including work on optimizing code for HPCs.
  • Strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience evaluating and coding mathematical models.
  • Must be a United States citizen eligible to receive and maintain a Secret or higher Department of Defense Security Clearance.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related science.
  • Prior history of successful independent research.
  • Prior experience with Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs), GPU programming, and Bayesian statistical inference.
  • Ability to tackle novel technical problems with limited guidance.
