Environmental Field Technician

The Environmental Field Technician is responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding the handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials. This includes familiarity with OSHA regulations and the ability to respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials. The successful candidate will have a strong attention to detail and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work in challenging conditions.
Key Responsibilities
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding the handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Respond to hazardous material spills or leaks promptly and effectively, containing and cleaning up the spill, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and preventing further contamination.
• Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials, participating in emergency drills and coordinating with first responders as needed.
• Safely transport hazardous materials from one location to another, using specialized vehicles and equipment designed for hazardous materials transport.
• Properly manage the disposal of hazardous waste materials, labeling, packaging, and arranging for disposal at authorized facilities.
• Collect samples of hazardous materials for analysis and testing to determine their properties, composition, and potential risks.
• Ensure that equipment and personnel are decontaminated after handling hazardous materials to prevent contamination and health risks.
• Maintain accurate records of all hazardous materials activities, including material inventories, incident reports, and waste disposal documentation.
• Provide training and guidance to other personnel on the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Maintain and calibrate specialized equipment used in the handling and analysis of hazardous materials.
• Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with hazardous materials.
• Effectively communicate with team members, emergency responders, and regulatory agencies when necessary.
• Minimize the environmental impact of hazardous materials by following proper disposal procedures and taking measures to prevent leaks or spills.
• Stay up to date with changes in regulations and industry best practices related to hazardous materials handling and safety.
Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Hazardous materials certification (e.g., HAZWOPER certification) preferred
• Knowledge of applicable regulations and safety standards
• Physical fitness and the ability to work in challenging conditions
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
• Good communication skills
• Ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds at a time
• Occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals/fuels or fumes
• Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions
