Position Overview
The Environmental Science Trainee will support project managers and technical staff in the execution of water resource initiatives while gaining valuable experience relevant to their academic pursuits.

Key Responsibilities
On a typical day, you will:

  • Work closely under the guidance of engineering professionals.
  • Assist in fieldwork for wetland assessments, sediment collection, and hydrological surveys, as well as provide on-site construction oversight (limited to two consecutive days).
  • Utilize your expertise in plant identification, hydric soil analysis, and wetland hydrology indicators.
  • Learn to independently gather field survey data using handheld GPS technology.
  • Contribute to report preparation that documents field findings and desktop research.
  • Draft technical reports as required by project specifications.

Qualifications & Physical Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Completed coursework in plant identification and soil classification.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work autonomously.
  • The capacity to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • The ability to occasionally lift equipment in and out of vehicles or overhead.
  • Flexibility to perform tasks that involve pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, and climbing.
  • Willingness to work in varying weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Experience working on water while using a boat or waders.
  • The ability to endure longer field days exceeding 8 hours and occasional overnight travel.
  • Experience navigating uneven, wet terrain and diverse ecological habitats.

Desired Education and Experience
We are looking for candidates who are:

  • Pursuing a degree in soil science, conservation, or a related discipline.
  • Experienced in soil judging.
  • Open to attending relevant training workshops.
  • Familiar with ArcGIS and AutoCAD software.
  • Possessing a WDNR or NASBLA Boaters Certification.
