Job Summary:

Under the supervision of an ophthalmologist, this role performs a variety of technical, treatment, and patient-attending duties. The successful candidate will administer medications, assist with minor surgical procedures, and conduct ophthalmic testing procedures. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role, as the individual will work closely with patients, practitioners, and other healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Directs and escorts patients to treatment/examination rooms, explaining test procedures and reviewing written instructions.
  • Records patient information, including reason for visit, history of present illness, and ocular findings.
  • Prepares equipment and examination areas for procedures.
  • Administers authorized medications under delegation of a Registered Nurse.
  • Observes patients for unusual conditions and alerts practitioners or RNs of any concerns.
  • Performs routine ophthalmic procedures, including visual acuity testing, axial length measurements, and tonometry.
  • Assists practitioners with minor surgery procedures and laser treatments.
  • Reviews and documents patient care and test results in medical records.
  • Performs clerical and receptionist functions, including pending prescription refills and maintaining equipment and supplies.
Requirements:
  • Two years of experience in an ophthalmic setting.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) approved Certified Ophthalmic Assistant program.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in adaptability, change management, customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, results orientation, teamwork, and written communication.
