Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Plan Review Specialist to join our team at the City of North Kansas. The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing plans and construction documents to ensure compliance with City Codes, providing excellent customer service, and coordinating the review and issuance of various types of planning applications and building permits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review plans, specifications, and calculations for building code compliance and assist with the interpretation and application of adopted building codes.
  • Coordinate with internal partners to ensure plan review consistency and streamline the permit process.
  • Provide written reports, staff comment letters, and other information to professionals, contractors, and the public regarding building codes, zoning ordinances, and general requirements concerning buildings and structures.
  • Utilize computer software to record and track information pertinent to the plan review process.
  • Responsible for on-time performance and accuracy of work.
  • Maintain a variety of files and records.
  • Participate in analyzing and researching land use data and trends.
  • May attend meetings of various commissions, committees, and other bodies or pertaining to special projects in support of the Community Development Director.
Requirements
  • Must possess an ABET accredited bachelor's degree in a professionally recognized architectural/engineering discipline.
  • Must obtain and maintain appropriate ICC certification within twelve months of employment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen as prescribed by the City.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and simple mathematical functions.
  • Knowledge of the International Code Council (ICC) codes and electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of construction, construction management, planning, and zoning standards, codes, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of land-use and community planning practices.
  • Knowledge of housing and occupancy regulations.
  • Knowledge of operations and function of government agencies and regulations.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and solve technical equations.
  • Ability to graphically convey data and planning proposals in the form of maps, charts, and graphs.
  • Ability to manage goals, objectives, and policies.
  • Ability to make decisions, interpret code and plan provisions, and convey these decisions and interpretations clearly to staff and policy-makers.
