Job Summary:

The Environmental Sciences Lab (ESL) Engineering Team at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Electrical/Mechanical Technician to support the development of underwater acoustic acquisition systems. As a key member of the team, you will assist with preparations for offsite operations, including inspecting, loading, unloading, packing, cleaning, refurbishing, repairing, and maintaining systems, associated hardware, and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with documentation of internal equipment and deployable systems.
  • Organize, maintain, and clean all storage and work areas.
  • Assist with procurement, general support documentation, and tracking of inventory.
  • Assist with hardware fabrication, maintenance, assembly, construction, and testing of electro-mechanical systems, subassemblies, and components.
  • Use of heavy machinery to move equipment around campus.
  • Transport items as required.
  • Other related functions as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Experience with basic hand tools and a strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Good communications skills and the ability to focus on all areas of a project or task.
  • Team player with a desire to take an initiative to learn new things.
  • Willing to take direction from others.
  • Capable of working both independently and in a team environment to achieve a common goal.
  • Basic computer skills using MS Word and MS Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to interpret tech manuals or drawings to execute tasks.
  • Understanding the operation and maintenance of mechanical hardware and systems.
  • Experience operating and working around mechanical handling systems such as cranes or forklifts.
  • Experience with basic shop chemicals and understanding the use of corresponding PPE.

  • Exposure to all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures.
  • Use of PPE.
  • May work around chemicals and chemical fumes.
  • May work around electrical/mechanical hazards.
  • Use of manual dexterity.
  • Climbing of stairs.
  • Climbing ladders.
  • Lifting and moving.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Work around overhead lifts with cranes and other industrial equipment.
  • Electronic lab and machine shop conditions.
  • Some weekend, evening and holiday work.
  • Will work outdoors, indoors and over water.
  • Occasional intrastate, interstate and international travel.
  • Will be exposed to high level of noise at times.
