Job Purpose
Progress Rail is seeking a skilled signal systems engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will take charge of the signal design for a variety of transit initiatives and serve as a primary liaison with our clients and transit authorities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and evaluate intricate signal circuit designs and software;
  • Develop and validate advanced software for signal systems;
  • Conduct design calculations, including headway analysis, safe braking, and power consumption;
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates for signal engineering, materials, installation, and testing;
  • Draft and assess technical proposals for signaling projects;
  • Engage with clients to discuss technical aspects of projects;
  • Oversee factory and field testing of signal systems;
  • Guide and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in freight or transit signal system design with a broad understanding of systems and equipment;
  • Familiarity with railroad train control systems, including train-to-wayside control systems, CAB systems, and various track circuits;
  • Knowledge of communication systems, including vital and non-vital fiber communication and positive train control;
  • Experience with grade crossing warning systems and related technologies;
  • Field experience in testing and troubleshooting transit systems is preferred;
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively;
  • Understanding of FRA, FTA, and AREMA regulations and guidelines.

Essential Functions
  • Strength: Primarily office-based work involving frequent sitting, occasional standing, and light to medium lifting (up to 30 pounds);
  • Motion: Regularly requires standard office-related movements;
  • Vision/Hearing: Frequent verbal communication, including both speaking and listening;
  • Work Environment: Typically situated in an office setting;
  • Emotional Demands: Ability to manage diverse project components while maintaining high attention to detail.
