Gresham Smith is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineering Specialist to join our Industrial Market team. The position requires the ability to support the firm's Business Development Principals and serve as the primary technical representative for the firm in pursuing, proposing, and securing consulting services that support manufacturing clients. This role involves preparing professional proposals for mechanical consulting services for potential projects, conveying technical issues and related service offerings to clients in a manner that secures their confidence, and demonstrating expertise in mechanical engineering. The successful candidate will be able to conceptualize the initial mechanical design approach for major phases of large industrial projects, specifying equipment, calculating loads, and selecting HVAC equipment. They will also prepare engineering reports, plans, and specifications for industrial projects, design and produce engineering drawings and instructions based on calculations, interpret and revise engineering drawings, and conceive, plan, and conduct research in complex problem areas.


The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Professional Engineer license, and at least 13 years of experience in mechanical engineering systems design with a consulting firm for Industrial/Manufacturing/Process projects. They will possess outstanding knowledge of ASHRAE, IBC code set, and NFPA codes standards, be able to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously, and have strong team player skills. Additionally, they will be digitally curious, comfortable working with coding and automation, and have design automation skills, including the application of parametric design tools such as Dynamo and Grasshopper. The salary for this position is estimated to be around $120,000 per year, based on industry standards and the location.


The Principal Mechanical Engineering Specialist will participate in contract bidding and administration, supervise the installation, repair, and replacement of systems, and ensure specifications and safety standards are met. They will also lead the coordination of projects with clients, contractors, outside consultants, and firm staff, communicate and interact with project team members, client representatives, review agencies, and others as appropriate to the project. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of codes and standards applicable to industrial design and be able to devise innovative solutions to unusual engineering problems.
