Chicago, Illinois, United States American Bar Foundation Full time

Position Overview

The American Bar Foundation (ABF) is seeking applications for the role of Academic Research Leader within its esteemed faculty. We are in search of one or more early to mid-career scholars who possess a PhD and/or JD, demonstrating a strong track record of innovative inquiry into socio-legal matters. We encourage candidates from all research fields, social science disciplines, and diverse methodological and theoretical frameworks. Our commitment to cultivating a diverse academic community is paramount, and we particularly welcome applications from historically under-represented groups.

Role Responsibilities

The selected candidate(s) will become integral members of a dynamic interdisciplinary network of scholars, dedicated to enhancing knowledge and promoting justice through rigorous, theoretically informed empirical research. Academic Research Leaders will hold a combination of full-time positions at the ABF and collaborative roles with nearby academic institutions. These positions are ongoing and subject to regular performance evaluations. All Academic Research Leaders are offered competitive compensation packages, comprehensive benefits, and substantial internal research funding, along with dedicated office space, technological support, and library access.

Research Autonomy

Academic Research Leaders enjoy significant intellectual freedom, allowing them to establish their own research priorities and design and execute their empirical studies. They are also expected to seek external funding and publication opportunities as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

For this hiring cycle, we particularly encourage candidates with expertise in anthropology or those whose research focuses on migration and citizenship, whether within the United States or on a global scale. We also welcome applicants from any discipline or research area who are interested in a full-time (non-joint) appointment at the ABF, although joint positions with local universities are also available.

Application Process

Interested individuals should prepare a cover letter of no more than three pages, which should include a brief statement regarding their commitment to diversity and inclusion in their academic and professional endeavors; a comprehensive curriculum vitae; a writing sample; and a Research Statement of no more than two pages outlining current and future research objectives. Additionally, three academic letters of reference are required.
