Job Summary

We are seeking a part-time Medical Lab Scientist or Medical Lab Technician to support our Special Tissue Typing Laboratory at UPMC Presbyterian. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in laboratory science and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Perform testing protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow established protocols.
  • Independently perform moderately complex and waived tests, with high complexity testing performed under the oversight of a Medical Technologist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, with the ability to recognize priorities and accommodate department needs.
  • Perform and document quality control according to established protocols, and inform supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Assist with the training and orienting of new employees, students, and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for the position, using materials and reagents cost-effectively.
  • Process specimens for analysis, enter accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, and ascertain the adequacy of patient information and sample integrity.
  • Honor confidentiality of patient information and follow all compliance guidelines.
  • Follow all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines, and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Maintain instruments according to procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.
Requirements
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Minimum 1 year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred, with familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems.
  • Medical Lab Scientist: Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, or equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologists performing high complexity testing.
