Director of Trading Engineering

We are seeking a highly skilled Director, Trading Engineering to join our team in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The Role
The Director, Trading Engineering will be responsible for designing and implementing high-quality, timely, and maintainable software solutions in an agile environment that meet functional and non-functional business requirements. This role will involve partner and stakeholder engagement, design, and release support. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in designing and developing low-latency trading systems, knowledge of WebSocket and FIX protocols, and experience in building matching engines, OMS/EMS, or exchange-connectivity platforms.
- Design and implement technology solutions for the Fidelity Digital Assets business
- Develop high-performance algorithms for trading and crypto trading
- Work closely with business partners to contribute to business-critical initiatives
- Demonstrate software engineering excellence through continuous integration and continuous deployment
- Stay current with IT blueprint, frameworks, and technologies that benefit the company and improve productivity; guide junior team members on technology
- Collaborate with multiple stakeholders and large cross-functional teams as part of work delivery
- Follow best practices and contribute to innovative solutions to increase productivity
- This is a hands-on role where you will write code for product features
- Set technical direction for software developers by concluding design with other tech leads and architecture
The Expertise and Skills You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field required
- At least 12 years of software engineering experience
- Strong background in designing and developing low-latency trading systems
- Knowledge of WebSocket and FIX protocols
- Experience in building matching engines, OMS/EMS, or exchange-connectivity platforms
- Experience using kernel bypass, e.g., Solarflare OpenOnLoad
- Extensive experience with modern Java using zero GC pattern
- Highly proficient in ultra-low latency design patterns and optimizing trading systems
- Hands-on experience with low-latency messaging products, such as Aeron, Solace, or 29West
- Proficient in SQL and a working knowledge of relational and time-series databases
- Experience with designing APIs, distributed systems, asynchronous workers, and resilient messaging services
- Understanding of microservice architecture and cloud-based deployments
- Ability to build reliable software that can withstand unreliable environments
- Can provide leadership and mentorship across small, agile teams in a collaborative environment
- Solid analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Interest in and experience with cryptocurrencies and a passion for keeping up-to-date in the space
- Drive and ability to deliver software with a high degree of automation
- Proficient with version control systems and can handle development for multiple releases in parallel
- Learning mindset and ability to demonstrate versatility in addition to specialization
- Ability to work effectively with both partners and project team members
- Knowledge of Agile methodologies or iterative development processes
- Knowledge of Acceptance test-driven development a plus
- Ability to take ownership

The Fidelity Digital Asset Trading Team is responsible for platform services and APIs that manage trading of crypto currency. Platform contains a crossing engine and a smart router that would connect and send client orders to other exchanges and liquidity providers. In addition to aggregating market data and routing orders, the platform also includes multiple internal/external facing user interfaces and API and services to support the platform.
