Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Obstetrical Technician to join our team at Advocate Health. As an Obstetrical Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our Labor and Delivery unit.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparation and Maintenance of the Sterile Field
    • Assist the Registered Nurse in obtaining all necessary supplies and equipment required to perform a surgical procedure.
    • Prepare and maintain the sterile field by placing instrumentation, drapes, and supplies in the prescribed arrangement.
    • Ensure all counted items on the surgical field are accounted for as described in the Surgical Count Policies.
    • Inform the Team Leader of changes to the physician preference cards.
    • Ensure proper handling and care of each surgical specimen.
  • Functions in the Scrub Role on Surgical Procedures
    • Ensure that the appropriate instruments and supplies are available as determined by the individual surgeon preference card.
    • Assist the surgeon and other team members in gowning and gloving and the draping of the surgical field.
    • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon as demonstrated by having all items required readily available on the sterile field.
    • Ensure the safety needs of the patient are maintained.
    • Utilize appropriate PPE at all times at the surgical field.
    • Handle equipment, sharps, and hazardous materials and instrumentation in a safe manner to ensure a safe environment.
    • Assist new associates in the L & D unit in their orientation to the scrub role in OR.
  • Maintenance of the Readiness of the Operating Room and Birthing Room
    • Return instruments and equipment to proper areas of the Operating Room and Sterile Core.
    • Restock OR suites and birthing rooms as necessary.
    • Inform Team Leader of any malfunctions related to the instrumentation and equipment.
    • Maintain all work areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
    • Manage unit supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  • Provision of Care Needs of Antepartum, Intrapartum, and Immediate Postpartum Patients
    • Assist with patient admission to L & D.
    • Prepare fetal monitor for patient application.
    • Provide environmental needs for the patient with pregnancy-induced hypertension.
    • Prepare Birthing Room for laboring and delivering patients.
    • Able to draw arterial and venous blood from umbilical cord for blood gas analysis.
    • Perform mother perineal care.
    • Assist with bathing needs of patient.
Requirements
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program, EMT certification, or a Certified Nursing Assistant educated in a hospital-based orientation program with at least 1 year experience in an L & D unit.
  • Ability to work well with internal and external customers.
  • Fine motor skills.
  • Ability to wear a surgical mask and gloves.
  • Auditory skills which allow incumbent to hear individuals whose speech may be muffled.
  • CPR.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials and life-threatening diseases.
  • Heavy lifting in accordance with DOL definition.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and day of the week, including holidays, and take call as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
