Job Summary

We are seeking a Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team at Northwell Health. As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of surgical procedures and providing exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Implement and communicate the age-specific plan of care and provide thorough reports at change of shift and relief time.
  • Communicate with team members regarding the need for special equipment and supplies, and implementation of care per established policy.
  • Participate in turnover activities and room set up for each surgical procedure, including connection of suction, electrical cords, power cables, and electrocautery; break down of operating room following each surgical procedure; assist with ensuring adequate supply of stock for patient care.
  • Monitor each case to ensure all infection control measures are met and all sterilization standards are adhered to.
  • Establish and maintain a sterile field and monitor the aseptic technique of the surgical team; document accordingly and take corrective action, as necessary.
  • Adhere to and monitor principles of aseptic techniques in the clinical environment, including use of sterile instruments and supplies. Follow procedure for decontaminating of all instruments used during the procedure and assist with instrument processing and sterilization.
  • Maintain environmental controls and take appropriate precautions regarding waste disposal.
  • Perform sponge, sharp, and instrument counts with the RN according to policy. Take appropriate action when counts are incorrect.
  • Ensure appropriate and safe use of equipment and instrumentation prior, during, and post-operatively. 'Second assists' as needed under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Correctly hold retractors as prescribed by the supervising physician; anticipate the need for surgical equipment and supplies and secure same.
  • Check and/or troubleshoot equipment for proper functioning prior to use and remove malfunctioning equipment for repair.
  • Assist surgeon with patient care procedures, including proper labeling of all specimens from surgical field, tapping mallet, and cutting suture (licensed personnel only) and performing surgical skin prep.
Requirements
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Surgical Technologist or in a clinical setting (for LPNs), required.
  • Successful completion from a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologist, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), required.
  • OR (meets one for the following): Completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps; Provides evidence that the person was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015; or In the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that of a surgical tech.
  • Must be and remain in good standing with NYS regulations, required.
  • Ability to function effectively in emergency situations.
