Job Summary

The Pathologist Assistant II - Surgical Pathology Specialist will assist pathologists in the gross examination and dissection of surgical biopsies and large complicated specimens. This role requires a strong understanding of anatomical pathology and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical biopsies and large complicated specimens
  • Maintain specimen integrity and accurate legible specimen identification throughout all technical and clerical processes
  • Produce high-quality, high-volume work in a timely fashion
  • Provide assistance with intra-operative consultations
  • Cut, stain, and coverlips cryostat sections for timely review
  • Document appropriate turn-around-time tracking information
  • Prepare specimens for imaging and photographs specimens
  • Maintain imaging equipment and files
  • Organize radiology files and photography
  • Participate in perinatal and adult autopsies as assigned
  • Review autopsy permit and patient charts
  • Perform related autopsy procedures, review gross and microscopic findings with attending, and prepare draft PAD as appropriate
  • Assist with orientation and instruction of pathology residents and medical students in Surgical Pathology and Autopsy procedures
  • Provide clinical performance feedback on pathology residents
  • Prepare materials and participate in conferences with residents, pathologists, and clinical staff
  • Assist in grossing and distributing tissues and organs to approved researchers
  • Perform technical and clerical tasks related to research projects
  • Exercise independent judgment in the performance of technical responsibilities
  • Prioritize technical workload based on assignment or established priorities
  • Respond effectively to changes in workflow adjusting work to incorporate STAT requests or fluctuations in work volume
  • Practice the proficient and safe use of all equipment necessary for the completion of all duties and responsibilities within defined turn-around times
  • Clean, disinfect, perform, and document routine equipment and workspace maintenance per SOP
  • Report equipment or instrument malfunctions appropriately
  • Assist manager and/or pathologist in development and implementing new and special procedures or techniques
  • May assist in maintaining procedure manuals in accordance with practice guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies
  • Participate in quality and process improvement efforts
  • Identify ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction
  • Makes recommendations to manager, implements and monitors changes as requested
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Follow established laboratory safety procedures in accordance with those regulatory bodies such as OSHA, FDA, EPA, etc.
  • Observe and practice Universal Precautions when handling biohazardous material
  • Assume a proactive role in laboratory safety and participate in development of safety protocols in surgical pathology
  • Perform minor spill cleanup per SOP when necessary
  • Participate in cost containment initiatives
  • Responsible for efficient use of supplies and reagents and proper operation of instrumentation
  • Provide backup assistance in a variety of activities in support of basic laboratory operations
  • Record all documentation consistently and legibly
  • May create Standard Operating Procedures
  • Maintain manuals and electronic records for easy retrieval of data as necessary
  • Investigate, escalate, and document any discrepancies or unresolved issues appropriately
  • Foster department and laboratory teamwork through effective communication
  • Adapt to change and handle stressful situations effectively
  • Take initiative for personal development by attending teleconferences, educational sessions, and required meetings, etc.
  • Work off shifts and weekends as needed dependent on workload and department schedule
