Position Overview:


The Histology Laboratory Supervisor is tasked with overseeing the daily operations of the Histology lab and managing the histology technical and support personnel.

This includes histotechnologists, histotechnicians, laboratory aides, grossing assistants, and clerical staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Laboratory Management:

Efficiently organizes time, materials, resources, and personnel to prioritize workloads and meet established turnaround times.

Ensure the technical quality of slide preparations.
Monitor and manage the daily special stain log to ensure timely completion of special stains.
Maintain adequate supplies and reagents in line with workload demands.
Ensure compliance with company and departmental policies among histology staff; initiate performance improvement as necessary.
Ensure timely return of cases held for special stains and recuts to the requesting pathologist.
Investigate and resolve production errors while escalating issues when necessary.
Evaluate and recommend new process improvements.
Perform bench work as needed and maintain proficiency in technical operations.

Equipment Oversight:
Ensure all equipment and instruments are maintained in optimal working condition; recognize malfunctions and escalate to the Equipment Specialist or Manager.
Conduct regular Quality Control Log Reviews to ensure proper equipment maintenance.

Quality Control:
Develop and supervise Quality Assurance Charts (Stains, Temperatures, Control Logs on Special Stains, etc.)

Maintain an up-to-date procedure manual in accordance with CLSI, CAP, CLIA, ISO, CLEP, and relevant state and federal guidelines, reviewing and revising as necessary.

Ensure adherence to all local, federal, CLIA, ISO, CLEP, and CAP regulations.

Safety Compliance:
Ensure that histology staff adhere to safety regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Encourage participation in safety initiatives.
Identify potential safety hazards and lead continuous improvement projects.

Leadership and Development:
Provide input on the evaluation of histology staff, including performance evaluations, salary adjustments, and disciplinary actions.
Conduct orientation and training documentation for new histology team members, along with ongoing reviews for current staff.
Meet regularly with direct reports to provide coaching and feedback for their professional development.

Maintain effective communication with the histology team to ensure timely dissemination of new policies and procedures.


Qualifications & Experience:
REQUIRED: Four (4) years of experience as a histology technician

Two years of supervisory and/or management experience
Strong working knowledge of CLIA, CLEP, CAP, and relevant state regulations

Computer Skills:
Proficiency in MS Office (MS Word, Excel); basic statistical skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

PREFERRED:
Bachelor's degree in science or business management
Certification as a HT or HTL (ASCP)
