Role Summary

Histology Intern - Involves Grossing, Embedding, and Special Stains

Responsible for acquiring and processing pathology specimens while ensuring accurate specimen identification. Conduct routine, special stain, and Immunohistochemistry tests for histopathological and cytopathological evaluations, along with data entry and record-keeping in line with departmental protocols.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Language Proficiency: Ability to read and interpret documents such as patient requisitions, safety guidelines, operational and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals. Capable of composing routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills: Proficient in basic arithmetic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Analytical Skills: Ability to apply common sense reasoning to execute instructions provided either verbally or in writing. Capable of addressing issues involving multiple concrete variables in standardized scenarios.

Position Requirements

A. A., A. S., B. A. or B. S. degree with coursework including 6 credits in Biology, 6 credits in Chemistry, and 12 credits in any Medical Laboratory-related subject. (Math and Physics credits are excluded.)

Minimum of 3 years of experience in a Histology laboratory within the last five years. Demonstrated proficiency in IHC testing and computer skills in word processing, Excel, and database management.

Histotechnologist I: HT/HTL (ASCP) eligibility required, with the expectation to take the ASCP certification exam within one year of employment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Engage positively with physicians, staff, and clients in alignment with the mission and values of Bako Diagnostics.

2. Execute routine and specialized tasks related to the preparation of slides for microscopic analysis by pathologists, adhering to established policies and procedures.

3. Ensure accurate accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples.

4. Manage paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.

5. Guarantee proper processing of tissue samples.

6. Embed processed tissue in paraffin.

7. Perform microtomy on embedded tissue.

8. Prepare slides for standard Hematoxylin & Eosin, Periodic Acid Schiff's, Grocott's Methenamine Silver, and Fontana Masson staining.

9. Conduct cover slipping of stained slides, either manually or through automation.

10. Capable of preparing solutions and reagents for special stain procedures.

11. May be tasked with obtaining and validating control tissue for special stains.

12. May be required to execute special stain procedures.

13. Conduct gross tissue examinations (high complexity testing) as outlined by regulatory standards.

14. Prepare solutions and reagents for IHC procedures.

15. Obtain and validate control materials for IHC testing.

16. Perform IHC testing.

17. Organize filing of completed blocks and slides.

18. Carry out routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment.

19. Adhere to the laboratory's standard operating procedures for job-related tasks.

20. Differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, cutting, and staining of tissue specimens.

21. May be involved in the development, execution, or validation of new procedures.

22. Capable of identifying issues that may impact test performance or reporting of results and addressing or reporting them to the Histology Supervisor or Technical Supervisor.

23. Ensure compliance with all safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards.

24. Adhere to all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations, along with GLP and GCP practices.

25. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, and biological materials. Personal protective equipment is provided to minimize exposure risks.
