POSITION SUMMARY

Provides comprehensive anesthesia and related care to patients across various medical services, including surgical, obstetric, and pain management settings.

Manages issues related to pain control, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and care for critically ill patients. Engages in effective communication and collaboration with the healthcare team. Adheres to established organizational policies, regulatory standards, and professional practice guidelines.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE
Valid New Mexico and federal DEA certification
Current nursing licensure in New Mexico
Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia program
Certification as a nurse anesthetist from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists or its predecessor
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Current AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Current AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
Active New Mexico CRNA license

KNOWLEDGE AND COMPETENCIES
Understanding of the nursing role and scope of practice as defined by the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act
Familiarity with the nurse anesthetist role and standards as outlined by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA)
Awareness of contemporary practices and standards in anesthesia care

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Basic computer skills (data entry, word processing)
Proficient in the use of anesthesia delivery equipment, including anesthesia machines, monitors, ventilators, IV pumps, and defibrillators

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducts and documents thorough pre-anesthetic assessments, including consultations and diagnostic tests; selects and administers pre-anesthetic medications; and secures informed consent for anesthesia
Engages with patients to review their medical history, including previous anesthesia experiences
Develops and executes a tailored anesthesia care plan
Reassesses the patient immediately before anesthesia induction
Chooses and initiates the appropriate anesthetic technique, which may involve general, regional, or local anesthesia
Administers anesthetics and necessary adjunct medications to maintain physiological stability and address any adverse reactions
Implements appropriate monitoring techniques to gather and interpret physiological data
Manages the patient's airway and respiratory function through various techniques, including intubation and mechanical ventilation.

Oversees recovery from anesthesia by administering medications and support to ensure homeostasis and manage pain and side effects.

Modifies pain management strategies using pharmacological and regional techniques, including labor epidurals and spinal analgesia.

Responds to emergencies with airway management and the administration of fluids or medications, employing basic and advanced life support techniques.

Continuously assesses the patient's condition and manages their blood, fluid, and electrolyte balance
Delivers safe anesthesia interventions in a systematic and prioritized manner to meet identified needs.
Collaborates effectively with healthcare team members, including physicians.
Maintains accurate documentation and patient records.
Assists in training and orienting new staff members.
Implements safety measures for patients, visitors, and staff.
Respects confidentiality and the rights of patients and colleagues.
