The Child Life Activity Tech plays a vital role in expanding the scope of service for the Child Life Department at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems. Under the general supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) and Child Life Manager, this position provides diversional and recreational services to pediatric patients (birth to adulthood) and their families, allowing Child Life Specialists to focus on clinical interventions.
Key Responsibilities:- Engage patients and families in recreational activities in group and bedside settings, promoting a positive hospital experience.
- Organize and maintain playroom spaces, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for patients and families.
- Supervise and train child life volunteers, promoting a culture of teamwork and excellence.
- Assist with special events, in-kind donations, and community visitors, fostering strong relationships with external partners.
- Provide administrative support to the Child Life Manager and department, ensuring seamless operations and effective communication.
- Engage in non-clinical interventions to enhance the patient family experience, assessing needs and concerns through daily rounding.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate activities in playroom environments and at bedside, reducing the emotional stress of hospitalization.
- Collaborate with Child Life Specialists to design activities that meet the psychosocial and developmental needs of patients.
- Communicate effectively with Child Life and medical staff through verbal and written methods.
- Assist the Child Life team in organizing hospital and unit-wide special events, promoting a sense of community and normalcy.
- Coordinate special events for inpatient and outpatient settings, ensuring seamless execution and effective communication.
- Collaborate with external groups to ensure compliance with CHoR visitation, safety, and confidentiality policies.
- Provide general administrative support to the department, including calendar management, voicemail, and email responses.
- Maintain regular correspondence with external groups, such as the Children's Hospital Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
- Serve on department committees as needed, promoting a culture of collaboration and excellence.
- Oversee the acquisition and organization of supplies, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for patients and families.
- Communicate supply needs to the supervisor and assist with cataloging and processing department orders.
- Maintain department wishlists for in-kind goods and document incoming donations.
- Shared responsibility for managing and supervising hospital volunteers with unit Child Life Specialists.
- Assist with the selection, orientation, and supervision of child life volunteers.
- Meet with volunteers daily to provide patient visitation lists and assign tasks as necessary.
- Primary responsibility for ensuring playrooms and child life staffed patient care environments maintain an appropriate and safe environment.
- Check playrooms daily and maintain cleaning logs in each space.
Oversee cleaning and distribution of toys to patient rooms, ensuring infection control policies are followed to ensure patient and family safety.
Additional Requirements: Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.
Employment Qualifications: Required Education: One year of college coursework with at least 2 courses in child development, early childhood/elementary education or a related field. Preferred Education: Bachelors degree in a related field.
