Position Overview:
This role involves essential duties in the upkeep and repair of the county's roadways, bridges, and drainage systems. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the Highway Maintenance Superintendent, demonstrating independence and sound judgment when necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on county roads and bridges, which may include tasks such as installing and fixing culverts, addressing road washouts, snow removal, and patching asphalt.
  • Operate various types of heavy and light machinery, including motor graders, front-end loaders, and bulldozers, while understanding their operational capabilities.
  • Manage and maintain portable power equipment and screening plants.
  • Perform duties in challenging weather conditions and during nighttime hours to ensure safe travel for the public.
  • Represent the county positively to the community.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of shop facilities and conduct routine vehicle and equipment servicing.
  • May be responsible for the installation and maintenance of highway signage.
  • May take on the role of Department Safety Officer.
  • Oversee inventory management for signs and materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a combination of training and experience that equips them with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • A valid Class B driver's license, with the expectation to obtain a Class A license with tanker endorsement within one year of hire.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol testing.
  • Experience in operating heavy machinery is preferred.
  • Capability to drive safely in adverse weather and recognize hazardous situations.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work safely under challenging conditions.
  • Familiarity with road signage and construction materials is advantageous.
  • Experience in highway work zone safety is a plus.
  • Must be able to report to work within a specified timeframe in all weather conditions.
