Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse

We are seeking a skilled Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team at the State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS)- West Region. This is a full-time position based at our Southbury Training School (STS).

Job Summary:

The Licensed Practical Nurse will provide high-quality nursing care to individuals with physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with our team to ensure the best possible outcomes for our clients.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide bedside care and mental health services to individuals with physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability
  • Assist doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals
  • Measure doses and administer medications, including insulin injections
  • Document medications using appropriate forms
  • Perform narcotic counts and check and administer intravenous medications
  • Report changes in individuals to doctors and ensure that restraints are applied correctly
  • Transcribe doctors' medication orders and dispense certain medications in their absence
  • Apply topical medication, take and chart temperatures, pulses, and respirations, and perform simple nursing treatments
  • Monitor general individual needs, including personal hygiene, and report on individual conditions and behavior
  • Keep the unit safe and healthy, administer enemas or suppositories, and perform Foley catheterization care
  • Orient individuals concerning medications and their use and may perform emergency first aid
  • May drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings and perform related duties as required
Requirements:
  • License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing
  • Considerable knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care, various medications used in conjunction for the care of individuals who have physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability, infection control practices, nutrition and diets, medical and lab sciences
  • Ability to keep records and lead staff
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Intravenous Certification
  • Prior nursing experience working with individuals who have Intellectual Disabilities
  • Skilled experience in Tracheostomy care
  • Experience working with Jejunostomy/Gastrostomy feeding tubes
Working Conditions:

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain individuals, may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals, and may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
