Perioperative Nurse Circulator Job Summary

This position is responsible for assessing and coordinating direct and indirect perioperative activity, including surgical cases, endoscopy, and OB, and patient care. The successful candidate will perform clerical/computer tasks associated with perioperative activity, assist other perioperative personnel and physicians/surgeons in surgical procedures and related tasks, and prepare patients psychologically and physically for surgical procedures/treatments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and coordinate direct and indirect perioperative activity, including surgical cases, endoscopy, and OB, and patient care.
  • Perform clerical/computer tasks associated with perioperative activity.
  • Assist other perioperative personnel and physicians/surgeons in surgical procedures and related tasks.
  • Prepare patients psychologically and physically for surgical procedures/treatments.
  • Complete documentation thoroughly, timely, and accurately complying with guidelines therein.
  • Act as assistant to Anesthetist.
  • Assist in PACU when necessary.
  • Take call on a rotational basis.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates ability to remain calm and level-headed during crisis or emergency situations.
  • Handles stress adequately.
  • Ability to be a team player.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of AORN standards and Operating Room principles.
  • Knowledge and previous application in aseptic technique and sterilization procedures.
  • Thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, and how it relates to surgical and anesthesia procedures.

Education and/or Experience

  • Currently licensed as Registered Nurse with the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
  • Current BLS required upon hire through the American Heart Association and ACLS certification required within six months of hire.
  • TNCC, PALS, NALS, or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • OR experience necessary.
  • PACU experience preferred.
  • For RNs graduating within the last 12 months, or RNs that have not practiced in an acute care facility within the last 24 months and have not previously completed a residency program will be required to complete the CMH-provided Nurse Residency program.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance

  • Physical ability to perform essential functions of the position.
  • Standing and walking most of the time while on duty is necessary.
  • Occasional lifting of patients without assistance.
  • Ability to work under physical and mental stress for several hours.
  • Must be able to understand written and spoken English.
  • Must have dexterity and mobility to operate equipment, retrieve supplies off shelves, push stretchers, tables, etc.
  • May work in darkened rooms occasionally.
  • Must demonstrate safe work practices with hazardous chemicals and ability to wear appropriate personal protective devices.
  • Must be able to tolerate wearing a surgical mask for long periods.
