Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Water Operator II to join our team at the City of Wentzville. As a key member of our water distribution team, you will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing our city's vital water infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and perform complex tasks related to the maintenance and repair of water mains, distribution lines, and associated infrastructure.
  • Provide guidance and direction to team members in the field, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Exercise independent judgment and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues and make decisions that ensure the efficient daily operation of water supply and distribution systems.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and other stakeholders to develop and implement strategies for optimizing system performance and minimizing downtime.
  • Assist in training new team members and providing ongoing mentorship and support to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment usage, and regulatory compliance.
  • Respond to emergencies and service disruptions promptly, coordinating with other departments and external agencies as needed.
Requirements
  • Two years of water experience, advanced equipment experience, Distribution II certification, and Class B CDL air brakes with tanker endorsement.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member in the water distribution field.
Water Operator I
  • The starting pay rate for a Water Operator I is $26.37/hr.
  • Must possess a Distribution I or the ability to acquire Class B air brakes with tanker endorsement.
  • This position will work under direct supervision and will train and perform a variety of essential tasks related to the maintenance and operation of the city's water supply and distribution systems.

Qualifications
  • Job qualifications – education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire.
  • Minimum one year experience in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the water distribution system, or other relevant experience required.
  • Job-relevant certification/license, vocational/technical program completion, or completion of apprenticeship preferred.
  • Valid Class A CDL with airbrakes and tanker endorsement preferred, or ability to obtain within 180 days of employment required.
  • Certification in Water Distribution DS-I testing within 180 days of employment required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with supervisors, co-workers, and customers by telephone, in writing, and in person.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think rationally in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Ability to develop goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work, as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and systems to accomplish tasks.
  • Basic knowledge in the use of general computer programs and applications, including email and mobile apps.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
