Employment Type: Part-Time

Work Hours: Flexible start times ranging from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, concluding between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM.

On-Call Requirements: Participation in weekend on-call rotation every 8th to 10th weekend.

Position Summary

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) plays a vital role in the surgical team, assisting surgeons and medical staff throughout surgical procedures. Under the guidance of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for maintaining a sterile environment to ensure patient safety. This role involves ensuring the operating room is prepared with all necessary equipment and supplies, while also staying updated on surgical techniques and procedures.

Key ResponsibilitiesPreoperative Duties
  • Prepare the operating room by ensuring cleanliness and availability of all instruments and equipment.
  • Stock and organize surgical supplies as needed.
  • Perform sterilization of all surgical instruments using appropriate methods.
  • Maintain accurate counts of needles, sutures, sponges, and instruments.
  • Support the Registered Nurse in pre-surgical preparations.
Intraoperative Duties
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures.
  • Maintain a sterile field throughout all surgical interventions.
  • Monitor and report any breaches in sterile technique.
  • Operate and assemble necessary surgical equipment such as lights and suction devices.
  • Conduct counts of sponges, needles, and other supplies before and after each surgery.
Postoperative Duties
  • Clean and restock the operating room after procedures.
  • Prepare the room with necessary equipment and supplies for subsequent surgeries.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse with post-surgical tasks.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Support the sterile processing department by sterilizing, assembling, and storing medical supplies and surgical instruments.
  • Perform other assigned duties as needed.
  • Engage in departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using relevant surgical equipment.
Qualifications
  • Completion of a post-secondary certificate or associate degree in surgical technology is required.
  • Previous experience in a similar role is preferred.
Certifications

Certification is preferred for this position.

Supervisory Duties

This role may involve supervising Student Scrub Technicians.
