Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Clinical Psychologist to join our team at Western State Hospital. As a Clinical Psychologist, you will be responsible for evaluating individuals with serious mental disorders and providing or referring for needed services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate individuals with serious mental disorders and provide or refer for needed services
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to maximize the quality of interdisciplinary care
  • Participate in planning for an effective transition and continued recovery in a community care setting
  • Participate in Departmental, Hospital, and state-wide committees and duties
  • Provide services at a system level (such as forensic evaluations)

Additional Responsibilities

  • Prioritize need for and provide psychological services (assessments, therapy, etc)
  • Lead/co-lead at least six hours of PSR groups per week
  • Conduct initial psychology assessment of patients admitted/transferred to assigned team
  • Assess/make recommendations for patients who exceed behavioral criteria for complex cases
  • Attend treatment planning and review meetings to provide input and recommendations from a psychological perspective
  • Complete TPC and progress notes
  • Perform forensic evaluations in accordance with applicable legal and professional standards

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association
  • License (or license-eligible) to practice clinical psychology in Virginia
  • Demonstrated experience in applying psychological assessment and intervention methods to individuals with serious mental disorders
  • Completion (or eligible to complete) the forensic evaluation training program in Virginia
  • Knowledge of serious mental disorders, psychological assessments, and therapeutic interventions
  • Ability to assess, formulate, and provide interventions for individuals with serious mental disorders
  • Ability to conduct individual and group psychotherapy
  • Ability to administer and interpret common psychological assessment measures
  • Consultation skills for the assessment, management, and treatment of individuals with serious mental disorders
  • Interpersonal, oral, and writing skills to communicate effectively with individuals with serious mental disorders, family members, and other individuals of varying backgrounds
  • Ability to collaborate with other disciplines to provide interdisciplinary care

Working Conditions

This position is eligible for a sign on bonus of up to $8,000. Must be new to state service in order to be eligible.

The successful candidate for this position will join 17 experienced and highly skilled licensed clinical psychologists. As a training site for many disciplines, opportunities are available to supervise clinical psychology graduate students, undergraduate psychology students, and other trainees. There are plentiful opportunities for continuing education in forensics and other areas relevant to the delivery of psychological services.
