Position Overview:
Under the guidance of departmental leadership, the individual will be accountable for the meticulous decontamination, examination, assembly, and high-level disinfection and sterilization of surgical instruments. Proficient operation of processing machinery is essential. This role necessitates expertise in instrument decontamination and assembly, alongside a comprehensive understanding of the sterilization techniques applicable to various devices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute the decontamination of surgical instruments in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines or as directed by the department supervisor. Proficiently operate all decontamination apparatus, including washer disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, cart washers, and automatic endoscope reprocessors (AER).
- Conduct thorough inspections of instruments post-decontamination to ensure cleanliness, integrity, functionality, and accurate inventory.
- Assemble instrument trays to guarantee device sterility while ensuring ease of access for end users. Utilize count sheets for accurate assembly and engage with the instrument tracking system for all processing functions.
- Package or containerize instrument sets following the manufacturer's specifications and the standards set by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). Ensure packaging is neat and facilitates aseptic opening in the operating room.
- Load sterilizer carts to prevent damage to packaged items, adhering to recommended loading procedures for containers and wrapped goods.
- Perform daily sterilizer tests on all steam and low-temperature sterilizers.
- Operate sterilizers in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring proper biological monitoring of loads.
- Document all load contents, link loads to the tracking system, confirm cycle parameters, and monitor sterilizer information, recording all relevant data (biological, mechanical, and chemical).
- Unload sterilizers with care to ensure items remain uncompromised, storing them in designated locations per the instrument tracking system.
- Adhere to endoscope manufacturer's processing instructions and accepted standards/guidelines.
- Assist in orienting new staff members within the department as required.
- Prepare hospital requisitions as necessary; oversee and communicate with management regarding items received from external vendors.
- Manage phone communications and relay information to colleagues and staff.
- Conduct inventory assessments of instrument sets and stock items designated for sterilization on a daily basis. Replenish supplies across all areas.
- Comply with policies, procedures, and safety standards. Complete mandatory educational assignments annually. Strive to meet objectives and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education:
No specific educational requirements; however, sufficient education to meet the criteria for the necessary licensing and/or certification as mandated by the issuing authority is required.
Minimum Experience:
A minimum of one (1) year of experience in surgical instrumentation or as an instrument technician is required.
Licensure Requirement:
Certification from IAHCSMM (International Association for Healthcare Material Management) as a Certified Registered Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST) or from CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing Technicians) as a Certified Sterile Processing Distribution Technician (CSPDT) is mandatory. Proficiency in both decontamination and sterile assembly/sterilization is essential.
