The primary duty of a Construction Traffic Coordinator is to manage traffic flow at construction sites and maintenance zones. This role involves directing vehicles for roadwork teams. The coordinator utilizes a large orange flag to signal motorists to reduce speed, halt, or navigate through the work area. Often, traffic coordinators collaborate with other personnel, stationed at opposite ends of the work zone, to ensure smooth traffic management through effective communication, either via two-way radios or hand signals.

Coordinators typically endure long hours in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, extreme heat, and cold. They are required to stand for extended periods with minimal breaks while remaining vigilant of their surroundings, ensuring the safety of drivers, construction personnel, and themselves.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain constant alertness to the environment.
  • Lift and manage weights up to 50 lbs.
  • Position oneself where visibility to oncoming traffic is maximized.
  • Stand continuously while directing traffic.
  • Utilize appropriate hand signals with the STOP/SLOW paddle.
  • Wear necessary safety gear when traversing the work zone.
  • Remain at the post until officially relieved.
  • Have a clear escape route in case of approaching vehicles.
  • Carry a valid certification card during flagging duties.

Required Attire:

  • Hard hat for head protection.
  • High-visibility clothing, such as a reflective vest, shirt, or jacket (in colors like orange, yellow, or fluorescent variants).
  • Long pants at all times.
  • Sign paddle with a minimum 5-foot staff length.
  • Steel-toed safety footwear.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and able to provide valid identification and work authorization.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record (no more than 3 points in a 2-year period).
  • Pass a drug screening and background check.
  • Ability to obtain a flagger certification card.
