The Laboratory Specimen Processing Technician plays a vital role in the Specimen Processing Department, ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory functions. The technician will gain comprehensive knowledge of various client test requests, contributing significantly to the overall quality of service and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Confirm patient demographics, physician details, requested tests, collection times, and relevant clinical information on laboratory requisition forms.
- Identify and address issues related to specimen types and missing information, collaborating with the Client Services team for resolution.
- Accurately input patient data into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Exhibit a willingness to learn assigned duties and understand the interconnectedness of all functions within Specimen Processing.
Essential Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- A minimum of one year of experience in a laboratory or data entry role is preferred.
- Exceptional data entry skills with a keen focus on detail and quality.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and medications.
- Typing proficiency of at least 45 words per minute with high accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Capability to interpret various handwriting styles.
- Strong command of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Maintain composure and good judgment in high-pressure situations.
- Manual dexterity for operating standard laboratory equipment and performing sterile techniques as necessary.
- Visual acuity and analytical skills to discern fine details.
- Ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods.
- Capacity to perform repetitive motions and lift up to 30 pounds.
- Willingness to work in environments with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, and biohazardous materials.
- Experience handling blood-borne pathogens and laboratory reagents, including live human specimens and bodily fluids.
