Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Genetic Counselor to join our team at US Oncology Network-wide Career Opportunities. As a Genetic Counselor, you will play a critical role in providing genetic counseling and education to individuals with a family history of cancer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide genetic counseling to individuals with a family history of cancer, including information on risk factors, genetic concepts, and inheritance patterns.
  • Collect and analyze medical and family history from patients, including personal interviews, medical records review, and conferring with clinicians.
  • Develop detailed computerized models analyzing inheritance patterns to calculate and report cancer risks for individuals and families.
  • Identify at-risk individuals who may benefit from genetic screening, testing, and/or counseling.
  • Coordinate genetic testing, including obtaining insurance authorizations and physician referrals.
  • Schedule laboratory and related diagnostic testing, and review information with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other clinicians to develop treatment plans.
  • Provide long-term follow-up of patients as necessary and assist in patient referral processes.
  • Maintain patient educational resources and literature.
  • Liaise with patients participating in cancer genetics research studies, recruit patients for participation in trials, obtain informed consent, and collect participant medical history.
Requirements
  • Masters degree in Medical Genetics/Counseling from an accredited genetics counseling training program.
  • Minimum five years of experience as a practicing genetics counselor, with oncology experience preferred.
  • Board certification (or eligibility for certification) from the American Board of Genetics Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics.
Work Environment

The work environment for this role requires frequent interaction with patients and their families, clinicians, and community support organizations. The position may also require some travel by automobile within the service area.
