Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Technologist to join our team at UPMC - Pittsburgh Medical Center. As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms and providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pre-Operative Preparation
    • Assist in preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
    • Assemble and adjust equipment to ensure proper function.
  • Perioperative Care
    • Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgical assistants during procedures.
    • Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, and assist with sponge or suction of the operative site.
  • Post-Operative Care
    • Assist in transferring patients to the recovery room.
    • Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Patient Care Duties
    • Function as a scrub technician in Labor and Delivery surgeries.
    • Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures.
    • Provide personal hygiene for patients.
    • Collect specimens following protocol.
    • Perform bedside glucose testing.
    • Record and report accurate vital signs promptly.
    • Communicate patient information to the healthcare team.
    • Assist patients with mobility and comfort.
  • Clerical Duties
    • Communicate patient information to health team members using information systems.
    • Serve as a resource for operating procedures.
    • Maintain accurate patient records.
    • Organize the work area.
    • Provide courteous reception to patients and visitors.
    • Handle telephone calls and collate charts.
    • File prenatal records.
    • Manage equipment appropriately.
  • Environment and Supplies
    • Maintain and clean patient equipment.
    • Clean patient rooms according to guidelines.
    • Stock patient care areas with supplies.
    • Ensure patient safety and respond to emergencies.
    • Maintain a clean patient environment.
  • Customer Service
    • Demonstrate customer awareness and treat individuals with respect.
    • Be receptive to questions and criticism.
    • Show genuine concern and empathy.
    • Consistently perform duties courteously.
  • Secondary Duties
    • Assist with patient transportation and specimen labeling.
    • Transport equipment between departments.
  • Empowered Team Member
    • Communicate effectively with all personnel.
    • Collaborate with the Patient Care Team.
    • Prioritize patient satisfaction.
    Requirements
    • CPR certification based on AHA standards.
    • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) within 6 months of program completion.
    • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal.
    • Act 33 with renewal.
    • Act 34 with renewal.
    • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
