The Anesthesia Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists by preparing and organizing the necessary equipment and supplies for surgical procedures. This includes the setup of monitoring lines, preparation of infusion sets, and operation of standard physiological monitors, as well as the collection of arterial blood gas and other blood samples. The specialist is also responsible for the operation, calibration, and routine maintenance of various technical devices utilized in the operating room. In managing activated coagulation time, the incumbent must apply specialized tests to evaluate blood clotting in surgical patients.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for an Anesthesia Support Specialist at Hackensack Meridian includes:

  • Team Collaboration: Actively engages as a member of the anesthesia team, providing a comprehensive range of specialized procedures and techniques essential for patient care during anesthesia, including in emergency scenarios.
  • Equipment Oversight: Assesses current equipment and technology, maintaining records on the age and condition of existing devices. Schedules regular maintenance and repairs, ensuring optimal equipment lifespan.
  • Specimen Collection: Adheres to established protocols and aseptic techniques for blood specimen collection, ensuring compliance with safety standards and environmental considerations.
  • Educational Coordination: Identifies educational needs in collaboration with the Chief of Anesthesia, organizing at least one in-service training session per quarter and liaising with vendors for appropriate training.
  • Scheduling Management: Collaborates with the Chief of Anesthesia and the operating room scheduling office to create a monthly staffing plan for all areas requiring anesthesia support, ensuring timely posting of schedules.
  • Supply Management: Monitors and analyzes supply utilization, eliminating unnecessary items and evaluating new equipment and supplies as per Corporate Materials Supply Chain initiatives.
  • Workroom Organization: Utilizes judgment and initiative to select appropriate instruments and methods, recognizing potential risks to patient safety and troubleshooting equipment and supply issues to prevent complications. Ensures cleanliness and decontamination of the workroom prior to patient arrival.
  • Patient Support: Assists in positioning and supporting patients during regional anesthesia procedures, such as spinals and epidurals.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrates a high level of technical skill, operating, calibrating, and performing routine maintenance on various technical equipment in a timely and effective manner.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in the operating room, with familiarity in OR supplies and hospital environments.
  • Understanding of sterile techniques and aseptic practices.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification as an Anesthesia Technician or Technologist.
