Are you a practical individual who enjoys outdoor work? We are currently seeking a dedicated professional to support our Public Works division. In this position, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the roadways and bridges that contribute to Sarasota County's reputation as an exceptional place to live, work, and enjoy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on all bridges within Sarasota County, including tasks such as concrete restoration, joint seal replacement, pressure washing, painting, and vegetation management to ensure safe travel for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Assist Skilled Trades personnel in the installation and repair of concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, and accessibility ramps.
  • Support the upkeep and repair of asphalt surfaces along county-maintained roadways.
  • Utilize tools and equipment for road repairs, modifications, and pothole remediation.
  • Establish necessary Maintenance of Traffic (M.O.T.) protocols for safety, including flagging according to M.O.T. standards, and perform physically demanding tasks such as shoveling, spreading, and compacting asphalt.
  • Engage in labor activities to keep roadways and rights-of-way free from obstructions, including debris and hazards.
  • Perform manual tree trimming to ensure proper clearance and visibility, using chainsaws, weed eaters, pole saws, and other hand tools.
  • Assist in the re-grading of non-maintained county roadways.
  • Operate various equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, small excavators, skid loaders, and front-end loaders, to maintain and repair road rights-of-way.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in a relevant trade (semi-skilled labor in the maintenance of concrete, asphalt, and vegetation along road rights-of-way).
  • A valid Florida Driver's License at the time of hire.
  • A Class 'B' CDL with Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire.

Physical Requirements: Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Substance Screening: This position requires passing a pre-employment substance screening. Failure to pass will result in disqualification from employment for five years.

Additional Information:

Starting Pay Rate: $17.33 (Step 1)
