Key Responsibilities:
  • Champion safe working practices and promote human performance improvement (HPI) on a daily basis.
  • Lead and engage in Job Hazard Analysis with assigned teams each workday.
  • Conduct installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of protective relay systems, powerline carrier devices, digital fault recorders (DFRs), and remote terminal units (RTUs).
  • Execute functional testing for protection and control circuitry linked to transmission lines, high voltage buses, transformers, circuit breakers, feeders, reactors, and capacitor banks.
  • Perform comprehensive testing of communication-assisted tripping schemes for both fiber systems and powerline carriers utilizing RTS, ProTest, or Protection Suite software.
  • Proficient in testing and calibrating GE and Westinghouse/ABB electromechanical relays.
  • Experienced in commissioning SEL microprocessor relays including models 311C, 311L, 387, 411L, 421, 487B, 487E, 487V, 587, 587Z, and 787.
  • Knowledgeable in commissioning GE microprocessor relays such as C30, D60, F35, L90, T35, and T60.
  • Support RTU upgrade initiatives for various clients.
  • Accurately document and submit test reports for client and regulatory purposes.
  • Interpret one-line, three-line, wiring, and schematic diagrams, identifying and addressing discrepancies.
  • Complete time and expense reports accurately while maintaining the assigned company vehicle in good condition.
Required Qualifications:
  • Ideal candidates will possess over 4 years of experience in the electrical testing sector, particularly with protection and control equipment for high voltage utilities, cooperatives, power generation, federal, or municipal clients.
  • Ability to oversee protection and control technicians and engineers.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Demonstrated experience with transmission and distribution relays including SEL, GE, ABB, and Westinghouse.
  • Familiarity with testing equipment such as Doble 6150, Powercomm PCA-4125A, Arbiter 931, Vanguard CT 2000C, and Omicron CT analyzer.
  • Experienced in utilizing test software like RTS, ProTest, or Protection Suite.
  • Skilled in developing detailed commissioning test plans.
  • Experience in performing relay end-to-end testing to validate communication-assisted tripping schemes such as differential, DCB, POTT, and transfer trip.
  • Strong understanding of safe work practices and human performance improvement relevant to protection and control work in high voltage substations.
  • Capable of conducting in-service load checks for new equipment to ensure operational correctness.
  • Familiar with NERC PRC-005-6 requirements concerning protection systems, automatic reclosing, and sudden pressure relaying maintenance.

  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and ongoing unannounced drug tests.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check covering a 7-year history.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license meeting minimum motor vehicle insurability standards.
  • Completion of 30-hour OSHA training.
  • Willingness to work in a field environment subject to varying outdoor conditions.
  • Availability for overtime as required and readiness to travel extensively to client work sites.
