The system comprises three hospitals operating under one license: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest with 390 beds, Jacobs Medical Center with 364 beds, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center with 54 beds. Additionally, there are ambulatory clinics located throughout the county to deliver care to the entire region.

Salary and Benefits

The estimated annual salary for this position is $684,500 to $865,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Chief Financial Officer participates in the UC Health performance-based incentive program and is eligible for excellent benefits provided by the University.

Job Description

This executive will provide financial leadership across the organization and guidance to system leadership on broader health system initiatives. They will advise and support senior leadership on strategic and operational opportunities, further strengthening the finance department while balancing opportunities for strategic growth and acquisition.

The CFO will enhance the role of strategic finance in developing new capabilities, ensuring standardization and accurate reporting capabilities are embedded within the organization. This executive will play a key role in operational excellence and performance improvement activities, looking for ways to enhance overall efficiencies through benchmarking and standardization.

They will ensure financial rigor and seamless coordination around the development of business plans, pro forma development, and all growth-related activities. This position is strongly oriented toward establishing a collaborative, strategic partner role with the UC San Diego Health senior leadership team as well as leaders within UC San Diego and the University of California System.

The CFO will be highly engaged in several major priorities and projects across the health system, leading efforts to formulate and implement new revenue streams and maximize reimbursement. They will lead business planning and funding strategy for all major capital projects and build relationships with the University's investment bankers as well as the UC capital market leaders.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business administration is required. Master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • CPA and other relevant certifications are optional.
  • A minimum of ten years of successful financial management experience, preferably as a Chief Financial Officer or Vice President, in a successful, multi-unit, complex integrated delivery health system.
  • Academic health system experience is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Experience with partnerships, joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and any pre- or post-deal activities including assessment, integration, and alignment.
  • Experience leading optimization, benchmarking, and standardization activities where dashboards, metrics, and workforce, operational, and health best practices drive financial decisions.
  • Credibility to forge strong partnerships with senior leaders across an enterprise.
  • A solid track record in hiring, developing, coaching, and promoting staff.
  • Demonstrated experience in a competitive healthcare market.
  • Experience with cost and revenue optimization projects on a grand scale and delivery on margin targets.
