About DREAM

Originally known as Harlem RBI, DREAM has evolved to serve over 2,500 young individuals in East Harlem and the South Bronx. Our mission is to provide a network of seven PreK-12, extended-day, and extended-year DREAM Charter Schools, alongside community sports-based youth development initiatives. We focus on rigorous academics, social-emotional learning, deep family and community engagement, and health and wellness, fostering lifelong learners who are prepared to achieve their aspirations both academically and personally.

Position Overview

DREAM is excited to announce the launch of our in-house food service program, which began in Fall 2023 and will expand to additional locations. This initiative aims to provide nutritious meals to 1,300 students nearly every day of the year, including breakfast, lunch, and potentially dinner, while also catering to our alumni, families, and community members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)-compliant food service program daily.
  • Prepare and serve meals for students and staff using NSLP-compliant recipes.
  • Manage the receipt and storage of food deliveries.
  • Assist with monthly inventory of food and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records related to food production, purchasing, and inventory, including HACCP documentation.
  • Gather and communicate feedback from students to the Lead Cook.
  • Support food production for special events, such as fundraisers and community meals.
  • Engage with students, employees, and leadership to build strong relationships.
  • Ensure high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and organization in the kitchen.
  • Adhere to USDA and Department of Health guidelines and regulations.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed, including dishwashing and organizing kitchen areas.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year of professional cooking experience.
  • Valid NYC DOH Food Protection Certificate or willingness to obtain prior to starting.
  • Strong knowledge of food safety practices.
  • Proficient cooking skills, with the ability to follow recipes and perform basic math for food preparation.
  • Ability to collaborate on a vision of excellence.
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to USDA NSLP and CACFP standards.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Flexibility to adapt to schedule changes.
  • Desire to receive and implement constructive feedback.
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations.
  • Strong belief in the mission and values of DREAM.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks.
  • Occasional exposure to various weather conditions.
