This role is based in Greenbelt, MD.


The OSAM-1 mission is managed by GSFC's Exploration & In-space Services (NExIS) and is a robotic servicing initiative aimed at refueling satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).


Mission Components:

The mission consists of three key components:

  • Flight Element: This includes the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and associated development testbeds.
  • Ground Element: This encompasses the systems necessary for conducting RSV operations along with the supporting networks and facilities.
  • Launch Element: This involves the Launch Vehicle and the necessary supporting facilities and services.

NExIS is tasked with the design, engineering, development, testing, and operational execution of the OSAM-1 mission through a collaborative team at GSFC.

The design and integration of the Servicing Payload will take place at GSFC.


The Lead Space Operations Engineer will play a crucial role in providing operational support to the OSAM-1 ground and operations team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Development of ASIST for the OSAM-1 Flight Operations Team.
  • Support for the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) simulator during testing events and flight product evaluations.
  • Creation of position descriptions and responsibilities for the Mission Operations Center (MOC) and Robot Mission Operations Center (ROBOMOC), including communication structures.
  • Assistance in the development of MOC/ROBOMOC visualization tools and situational awareness capabilities.
  • Formulation of CONOPS for utilizing multiple commanding sources (MOC and ROBOMOC) at varying commanding rates.
  • Development of CONOPS for simulation/testing and uplink of operational products, including maneuvers, stored command loads, and FSW/table uploads.
  • Support for the OSAM-1 Ground Element (RGE) requirements verification testing.
  • Contribute to the development of operational/testing products, including STOL procedures and telemetry displays.
  • Facilitate end-to-end testing and mission readiness evaluations, which include simulations and rehearsals.
  • Assist in developing the core Flight Operations Team (FOT) shift staffing profile, shift handover processes, and reporting mechanisms.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of nine (9) years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with Mission Planning Software (MPS) and STK Scheduler, preferably within a NASA program.
  • Expertise in CONOPS development.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience in requirements development, verification, and testing.
  • Proficiency in developing operational and testing procedures, including STOL procedures.
  • Telemetry and commanding experience.
  • Mission operations experience at GSFC is a plus.
  • Experience in managing a team of operations engineers, scheduling shift work, and overseeing shift handover processes.
