Job Overview

Position Title: Volunteer Firefighter

Compensation Structure: Volunteer Role, No Benefits Provided

Department: Fire Services

Supervision: Operates under the general oversight of fire department officers

Role & Schedule: The Volunteer Firefighter is expected to respond to emergencies at any hour, every day of the week. Participation in training drills on Wednesday evenings throughout the year is mandatory.

Role Summary: This volunteer position is essential for assisting with the routine operations and emergency responses of the fire department.

Key Responsibilities:

The following tasks are representative of the responsibilities associated with this role:

  • Responds promptly to the fire station when alerted for emergencies and rides on fire apparatus to incident scenes.
  • Enters structures with hose lines as part of a firefighting team.
  • Utilizes nozzles to apply water streams effectively on fires.
  • Provides first aid and supports Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in delivering Basic Life Support.
  • Attends training and drill sessions, with a minimum requirement of two (2) Wednesday drills each month.
  • Operates ladders, including raising, lowering, and climbing.
  • Executes forcible entry into buildings when necessary.
  • Implements ventilation techniques to remove smoke, gas, and heat.
  • Handles and operates various fire extinguishers.
  • Assists in extinguishing and overhauling fire incidents.
  • Supports the maintenance, inspection, and testing of fire vehicles and equipment.
  • Participates in salvage and cleanup efforts post-incident.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness in and around the fire station.
  • Contributes to fire investigations.
  • Stays updated on current fire safety practices.
  • Familiarizes with fire department policies and procedures.
  • Engages in public education initiatives.
  • Participates in fundraising events for the department.
  • Involves in departmental training activities.
  • Assists in managing hazardous materials spills and releases.
  • Supports technical rescue operations as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must reside within the response area or work in the district to ensure timely response to calls.
  • All candidates must pass a background check; a criminal history that disqualifies DPSST certification is not acceptable.
  • Minimum age of 17 for Cadet Program entry; 18 years required to serve as a firefighter.
  • Possession of a valid Oregon Driver License is required upon hiring.
  • Must maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a drug and alcohol screening prior to employment is essential.
  • All new recruits must successfully complete a physical ability assessment.
  • Applicants must be drug-free and consent to ongoing drug testing.
  • Tobacco use is strongly discouraged.
Work Environment:
  • Work occurs primarily in office settings, vehicles, and outdoor environments, under various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, during both day and night shifts.
  • Job duties are often performed in high-pressure and emergency situations.
  • Exposure to alarms and hazards related to firefighting and emergency medical assistance, including smoke and harmful chemicals, is common.
  • Occasional work near moving machinery and at heights.
  • May encounter wet or humid conditions, toxic substances, and risk of electrical shock.
  • Noise levels vary from quiet in office settings to loud at emergency scenes.
Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, and use hands for various tasks.
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl.
  • Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
