About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Building Permit and Planning Technician at Tooele County. As a key member of our Community Development Department, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our building permit and planning processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Issue permits and Certificates of Occupancy, ensuring compliance with zoning laws and regulations.
  • Assist the Office Manager and building and zoning departments with scheduling inspections, processing permits, and responding to customer inquiries.
  • Perform customer service duties, including addressing issues and answering questions for customers and inspectors.
  • Conduct research and correct errors in permit and/or receipt numbers.
  • Prepare documentation for inspectors and assist with zoning questions on land, zoning laws, and checking flood zone and wetlands maps.
  • Perform clerical and administrative work, including answering phone calls, receiving visitors, and maintaining files and archives.
  • Assist the Planner/Zoning Administrator with reviewing building permits and site plans, ensuring compliance with zoning requirements.
  • Address envelopes and distribute Planning Commissioner packets, and post and publish notices for all Planning Commission agendas and attachments.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent and two years of office experience.
  • Proficiency in computer software programs, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access or similar database software.
  • Basic bookkeeping skills and experience handling money.
  • Valid Utah driver's license.
  • Ability to be certified as a Permit Technician within one year.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three years of full-time experience in drafting, engineering, architectural aide environment, building/zoning department, or related experience.
  • Certification as a Permit Technician.
  • Basic knowledge of residential and/or commercial building codes.
Working Conditions

The work environment is mostly office-based, with occasional travel required. The physical demands of the job include frequent standing or sitting, walking, talking, or hearing, and the ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
