Job Title: Dental Hygienist

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Dental Hygienist to join our team at the Oregon Department of Corrections. As a Dental Hygienist, you will be responsible for providing professional dental hygiene services to adults in custody in a correctional setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform professional chairside dental hygiene procedures, consistent with community standards.
  • Record health histories, take and record blood pressure and vital signs, and perform head and neck exams.
  • Conduct oral inspections and measure periodontal pockets, administer fluoride treatments, and deliver oral antibiotic prophylaxis as prescribed by a dentist.
  • Provide patient education in oral hygiene, take intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs and photographs, and give pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
  • Administer local anesthetic agents, polish and smooth restorations, and perform oral prophylaxis and removal of deposits and stains from the surfaces of teeth.
  • Perform deep cleanings (Scaling and Root planning), soft tissue curettage, and place and remove perio dressings.
  • Sterilize equipment and disinfect operatories, fabricate and deliver fluoride trays, and pack and medicate extraction areas.
  • Place approved medications (antimicrobials) prescribed by the dentist under the gingiva, remove sutures, and document encounters and treatment plans in the patient's medical record.

Requirements

  • Possession of a dental license as a dental hygienist issued by the Oregon Board of Dentistry at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
  • Current Oregon licensure for the Professional Practice of Dental Hygiene, with an expanded practice permit preferred but not mandatory.
  • Radiologic Proficiency Endorsement and Local Anesthesia.
  • Must satisfy all Oregon Board of Dentistry continuing education requirements.
  • Oregon Driver's License.
  • Current CPR – Advanced LBAS for health care workers.

Working Conditions

Will be expected to share the mission, vision, and core values of the department; requires being a role model of pro-social behavior and having an attitude that conveys dignity and respect in the treatment of others.

Requires contact with adults in custody, walking or standing for long periods, climbing and descending stairs, and possible exposure to chemicals, radiation, communicable diseases, or other hazards inherent in health care and correctional settings.

Supervision and control of adults in custody in an inherent responsibility. Frequently works alone with little or no direct supervision.

Sitting for extended periods of time. May require travel to various institutions within the state. A valid driver's license and a good driving record or be able to provide an acceptable alternative method of transportation.

The Oregon Department of Corrections is responsible for over 12,000 adults in custody in 12 state prisons throughout Oregon. It advises and evaluates counties regarding administration of probation and parole programs supervising more than 24,000 offenders in Oregon communities.

About the Process – What to Expect

  • After the application deadline, a recruiter will review submissions for education and experience to identify candidates who best fit the minimum qualifications and requested skills.
  • Top candidates will be referred to the hiring manager.
  • The hiring manager will review your application and schedule interviews.
  • Interviews will be held with a panel of stakeholders who have completed panel assessment training. Scores will be determined based on predetermined questions and scoring guides. Preferences points will be applied in compliance with relevant laws and bargaining agreements.
  • Final candidates will have a background check, and reference checks.
  • A Classification and Compensation analyst will review the Workday Application of the successful candidate to determine starting wages.

Requirements for Employment

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, there may be some felony convictions that could disqualify you for this position. However, having a felony record does not exclusively restrict you from being considered as an applicant. CJIS clearance is done at the conditional job offer.
