The Rolling Stock Maintenance Technician is responsible for the inspection, upkeep, and repair of railway vehicles and associated equipment.

Key responsibilities include painting and labeling freight and passenger cars and locomotives; performing carpentry tasks on locomotives and facility structures; rerailing rolling stock using blocking, cables, and rerailing devices; coupling air hoses and conducting air brake tests in train yards; repairing rolling stock components in compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and company standards; providing locomotive maintenance, including repairs, part replacements, and adjustments (including Electrical/Electronic components); servicing locomotives by adding fuel and other necessary supplies; diagnosing locomotive component issues; assembling parts related to the diesel engine, air compressor, radiator, trucks, and car body; conducting locomotive inspections and completing necessary maintenance reports; and performing additional essential and nonessential tasks as assigned.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:


Adheres to company and governmental safety protocols, employs common sense, takes necessary precautions (e.g., utilizing protective gear), and maintains a high level of safety awareness in the workplace.

Engages in maintenance activities, both scheduled and as needed, which include conducting air brake tests, lubricating moving parts, cleaning components, and painting.
Completes necessary documentation and reports related to vehicle repairs.
Operates transport vehicles, cranes, locomotives, shop equipment, and company vehicles as required.
Performs rerailing tasks using blocking, cables, rerailing frogs, and heavy machinery.
Responsible for fulfilling duties and working hours as scheduled, including overtime, holidays, nights, weekends, and travel as necessary.
May perform other essential and nonessential functions as assigned, including tasks typically assigned to other maintenance technicians.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education, Licenses/Certifications, and Work Experience: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable under the company's commercial auto policy throughout employment. Employees will be required to obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire. Previous experience and knowledge of transportation/train operations is advantageous. Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Mental Requirements: Proficient in mechanical principles and their application.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to interpret and provide written, graphic, and verbal instructions, and seek clarification when necessary.
Ability to read, comprehend, and adhere to the General Code of Operating Rules.

Must comply with Federal Railroad Administration and other regulations as mandated by the company and relevant governmental authorities.

Ability to foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, management, vendors, and contractors.
Demonstrates sound decision-making skills in unfamiliar situations or when faced with changes, interruptions, and obstacles in workflow.
Assumes responsibility, effectively addresses issues, and exercises independent judgment in decision-making.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Constantly engages in stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, hand-eye coordination, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, and hearing.

Frequently involved in pushing, pulling, climbing up to 20 ft., balancing, overhead work, repetitive motions, and close visual work.

Regularly lifts up to 50 pounds.
Occasionally sits, travels, and lifts up to 100 pounds.
Must have at least 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without corrective lenses.
Contact lenses are not permitted under company safety standards except for office work.

A hearing threshold of 40 decibels at 500 HZ, 1000 HZ, and 2000 HZ, with or without aids.

Must be able to distinguish colors with no more than four (4) errors in a sixteen (16) plate isochromatic test.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is frequently performed outdoors.

Batteries; malfunctioning electrical equipment; moving and rotating machinery (risk increases during nighttime conditions); working with cleaning agents, caustic solutions, electrical cleaners, and fuel; extended periods of continuous work (e.g., multiple shifts); low and high voltage equipment; and working in proximity to other personnel.
